Blades transforms into an orange rescue helicopter. In the series, he has three modes: robot, helicopter, and dinosaur. The toy line also features a fourth mode—a jet plane. He has black eyes and yellow dots.

Blades is a member of the Sigma-17 rescue team. His primary role is air support: conducting rescue operations, delivering supplies, and helping people in hard-to-reach places. He is partnered with Dani Burns. Despite a rocky start, they eventually became good friends. Blades also acts as a mentor to the bot Medix. He supports and encourages other team members, such as Whirl.

In robot mode, Blades is armed with a grappling hook. In helicopter mode, he can fly, hover, and use the grappling hook to lift heavy objects or rescue people. His helicopter mode is also modified to use a grappling hook. In dinosaur (pterodactyl) mode, Blades gains the ability to fly and fire an energy beam from his mouth. However, this form was difficult for him due to unpleasant memories associated with dinosaurs and a lingering fear of flying.

Blades is an emotional and sometimes timid character. He is very fascinated by Earth and its culture, and enjoys watching movies and TV shows. Because of his horror films, Heatwave jokes that the Rescue Bots' base now needs to be checked for monsters. Blades's main characteristic is his fear of heights. This is due to the fact that on Cybertron, he had a ground vehicle mode and was unaccustomed to flying. At first, this created difficulties when working with his partner, Dani Burns, but over time, Blades overcame his fear and became confident in flying.

Blades was the last of the Rescue Bots to choose his Earth form as a vehicle, and to his disappointment, he discovered it was a helicopter. He is the official mascot of the Griffin Rock Lad Pioneers (analogous to the Boy Scouts) and earns his own troop badges in later episodes. In the episode "Bumblebee to the Rescue," Blades meets the legendary Autobot scout Bumblebee, whom he sincerely admires. In one episode, Blades even pretended to be a "wise mentor" and traveled to a remote mountain to encourage another bot on a rescue mission.
Blades is a shining example of how even the most emotional and sometimes doubting character can overcome their fears and become a true hero.
