Intensive care unit (ICU) staff are a special breed of doctors and nurses. Their work is a balancing act on the brink of chaos, so the demands placed on them are more stringent than in regular departments.

Here are the key traits, divided into skill and character:

🧠 Mastery (Professional Core)

· Fanatical attention to numbers: They see the patient's condition not by "complaints" (the patient is often unconscious), but by monitoring the monitors. The technician is required to immediately connect a drop in saturation with the pressure in the catheter and understand the cause within five seconds.
Technical virtuosity: These are "diamond-like hands." Knowing how to insert a central catheter into a dormant vessel, perform intubation in an awkward position, or initiate ECMO is not theoretical, but rather a matter of raw motor memory.
Algorithmic thinking: Actions are conditioned to automatism (like a pilot in an accident). There's no time to think—there are protocols (for example, in the case of cardiac arrest, actions are scheduled down to the minute). The master knows when to strictly follow protocol and when to break it to save a life.
· Broad erudition: A resuscitator is a therapist, surgeon, neurologist and toxicologist all rolled into one, plus the ability to work with equipment.

Cool Head (Emotional Armor): There's no room for panic. If a patient is in fibrillation, the staff doesn't fuss, but works efficiently and even matter-of-factly. Empathy is demonstrated not by tears, but by swift action.
· Rigidity and persistence: They have to inflict pain (inserting catheters, performing chest compressions) to save lives. They have no room for hesitation—their tone and pressure determine whether the nurse and assistants will comply.
Stress Resistance and Self-Irony: They see death daily. To avoid burnout, they develop a protective "black humor" and a habit of discussing difficult situations with cynical frankness. This isn't cruelty; it's a shield for the psyche.
· Command: There are no "stars" in the ICU. The doctor makes the decision, but a nurse can shout, "The blood pressure has dropped!" and everyone follows suit. Impeccable chain of command is essential.

The hospital has two floors. The first is a regular block with doctors' offices and wards for mild patients. The second floor is the intensive care unit, also with doctors' offices and wards for more severely ill patients.
