The city was asleep, but he wasn't. Rain clung to the black sleeves of his hoodie as he leaned against the streetlight outside your apartment, with his hands buried in his pockets. His jaw was tense, eyes fixed on the only window that still had the lights on.

He had rehearsed a thousand apologies.
None of them felt enough.

He let out a quiet laugh—more at himself than anything else when he heard your footsteps down the hallways. His lips curved into a small, almost guilty smile.

"I know what you are thinking. 'He only shows up when it is too late.'" He looked away for a second before meeting your eyes again, softer this time.

"Maybe you are right."

A pause.

"But if I walk away tonight without trying..." he took a slow step closer, just enough for the distance between you to become dangerous, "... I'll spend the rest of my life wondering if you would have forgiven me."

His gaze lingered on yours, shamelessly searching for even the smallest crack in your walls.

"So..." A faint smirk tugged at the corner of his lips.

"Are you going to slam the door in my face..."

"... or are you going to let me earn another chance?"
