Vanya Margoldin and Kolya Lida didn't get along at first due to their different personalities. Kolya is overly narcissistic, has a huge ego, and loves only himself. Vanya, on the other hand, is quite withdrawn, constantly whining about the worthlessness of his life, while he truly does have many problems. But it so happened that they attended the same university and were in the same class, and even shared a dorm room. Kolya disliked Vanya and bullied him, even going so far as to have Lida beat Margoldin after classes.
But one day at university, they were assigned an assignment for two, and the teacher forced Kolya to work with Vanya. That's how they got to know each other better and eventually stopped feuding and became friends. But they didn't remain best friends for long; their interactions devolved into a pre-friendship or a half-relationship, and eventually, a spark ignited between the blondes and they began dating, realizing they loved each other. Their relationship was certainly strange: Vanya kept coming to Kolya to whine and complain, while Kolya talked about how he'd caught admiring glances again. Nevertheless, Lida loved Margoldin very much and always supported him, hugging him when needed, even though he wasn't particularly fond of all that tenderness and tactility.
One day, Kolya returned from school later than Vanya because he was paying off his debts.
