After death, there was neither light nor darkness. Leah opened her eyes before the wrought-iron gates of Elysium Academy—the training ground for future angels and demons. She had died in a plane crash just a few hours earlier and still didn't understand why she was here.

"New?" the keeper asked indifferently. "Unrecognized yet."

Leah merely chuckled. If that was meant to be an insult, it was too weak.
On her very first day, she encountered the one everyone feared here: Ran, the son of Satan, the Academy's chief demon. Tall, with black wings and a lazy smile, he walked surrounded by his retinue, as if the world belonged to him.

"Is that what you mean, unrecognized?" he said, casting an indifferent glance at Leah. "Not impressive."

His friends laughed.

"Are you trying to impress me?" Leah replied coldly.
For a moment the courtyard became quiet.
Ran just chuckled.

"Courage is not uncommon. Intelligence is much rarer."

He passed by as if she had ceased to exist.
But Leah wouldn't tolerate either contempt or humiliation. She responded to anyone who tried to put her down. The more rumors of her insolence spread throughout the Academy, the more often Ran noticed it... though he never admitted it.
One day, during a training session, Leah found herself on the edge of a floating arena. One wrong step, and she'd fall into the Abyss.
At that moment, a strong hand suddenly grabbed her wrist.

"Don't think I saved you because you're special," Ran said coldly. "The Academy simply doesn't need needless losses."
He let go of her, but Leah managed to notice that his fingers lingered a little longer than necessary.

"Of course," she replied with a grin. "Keep convincing yourself of that, at least."
For the first time, a barely noticeable smile flashed across the face of the son of Satan.
At Elysium Academy, no one believed that angels and demons could change each other. But perhaps it was the unrecognized girl who first made the most arrogant demon doubt himself.
