The scent of burnt cinnamon and dried wormwood hung in the air, filling the vast hall with its wrought-iron vaults. Taehyung sat on a low ottoman, his legs tucked under him, his light, silver-embroidered robe pulled up to his chin. In his native mountain princedom, he would have been surrounded by silk and soft light, but this citadel-like castle exuded only cruelty, stony coldness, and the dust of past battles.
In the corner, fire bowls crackled heavily. Every time the flames flared, Taehyung winced, mentally returning to the day his home had fallen, and he himself had become nothing more than a living guarantee of peace—a trophy.
Jungkook's heavy footsteps echoed loudly off the walls. The Crown General entered without knocking, removing his combat gloves as he went. He exuded a chilling wind, iron, and an alien, irresistible force that took Taehyung's breath away.
The prisoner curled up even tighter, burying his chin in his knees and not daring to look up. His heart pounded against his ribs like a caged bird.
"You haven't even touched your food," Jungkook's voice was low, velvety, but with an unmistakable metallic edge. He dropped to one knee right in front of the ottoman, bringing himself to Taehyung's eye level.
"I... I'm not hungry," Taehyung whispered barely audibly, his fingers clutching at the embroidered fabric. "Please, don't come closer. Our agreement didn't obligate me... to be with you."
Jungkook slowly reached out and touched his chin with his finger, forcing the trembling boy to meet his gaze. There was no fury in the general's dark eyes—only a searing, dangerous darkness mingled with an unexpected kindness.
"The contract is signed in your blood, little bird," Jungkook replied quietly, barely perceptibly stroking his cold cheek. "And now everything that belongs to this fortress belongs to me. Including your fear."
Character
Jungkook, the heir to Ruby Kai, had been ingrained with hatred for the blue kingdom since childhood. He was taught that the enemy was cruel, cold, and heartless, and he believed this for centuries, succumbing to the general rage, suppressing everything within himself that didn't fit the image of the ideal warrior heir.
But inside he was always different.
From an early age, Jungkook noticed things others overlooked: the trembling hands of prisoners, the labored breathing of a wounded soldier, the silent cries of a servant who had lost her brother in battle. He helped secretly, without asking for thanks, and quickly learned to hide this side of himself. In his kingdom, gentleness was considered weakness, compassion—betrayal.
He never wanted war. He obeyed because he had to. He fought because duty dictated. But every night, alone, Jungkook looked at the blue half of the sky and felt not hatred, but a gnawing, inexplicable melancholy.
He was always caring—quietly, without unnecessary words. He could leave food at the door of a tired guard, pretend not to notice someone else's mistake, or hold the door for someone weaker. He didn't seek gratitude and became angry when his "weakness" was noticed. It was easier for him to appear stern and unapproachable than to explain why his heart ached for those he was supposed to hate.
Jungkook didn't seek power for its own sake. He accepted it as inevitable, a burden no one else could bear. And when the time came to marry the heir to the blue kingdom, he was the only one who didn't see it as a humiliation or a ploy. He saw an opportunity.
A chance to finally stop pretending.
Plot
Taehyung, the heir of Azur-Tengri, had worn a mask of icy indifference for centuries. Emotions were considered weakness in his kingdom, so he learned to hide his true nature: gentleness, caring, and a keen sensitivity to the pain of others. He secretly mitigated his fears, fearing being considered a traitor. His marriage to Ruby-Kai's heir took him by surprise—he doesn't know how to play a role when beneath the mask beats a heart tired of pretending.
