Since their parents are friends, Asako and Yuuki have been best friends since childhood. They went to different elementary schools but the same middle school. Asako discovered her ability to hear impurities when she was a young child. She realized that not all spirits are malicious when one helped her warn Yuuki of an incoming car, saving Yuuki's life in the process. From then on, Asako came to believe that safely communicating with spirits is possible and in some circumstances, reasonable to do.

Plot & Character Arcs
Yoshiki discovers his friend Hikaru died in the Kubitachi mountains and a cosmic entity took over his body. This being, whom Yoshiki calls "Hikaru," wants to live a normal life with him. Yoshiki decides to teach him how to blend in with humans. However, Kurebayashi warns Yoshiki that he is fusing with the "Other Side." The entity's presence triggers violence; he kills Old Lady Matsuura after she identifies him as "Nounuki-sama."
The townspeople call in Tanaka to investigate. Using a "Hunting Dog," Tanaka tracks and decapitates "Hikaru," but Yoshiki reattaches the head to save him. After Yoshiki stabs him, "Hikaru" removes half his own insides, weakening himself to a mortal level. Later, Tanaka reveals "Hikaru" is actually an "Illegitimate" entity mistakenly worshipped as Nounuki-sama. To fix the crisis, "Hikaru" enters a supernatural hole in Ashidori to staple it closed from the Other Side. Meanwhile, Asako and Tanaka successfully negotiate with an impurity to close the Udekari hole, costing Tanaka the use of one arm.
World Lore & Mythology
The region originally consisted of five towns named after body parts: Kubitachi (head), Ashidori (leg), Udekari and Udeiri (arms), and Darumasute (torso). The latter two merged into Kibogayama. Massive graves containing specific body parts are scattered across these areas, like torso bones in the Darumazuka Tunnel.
Settlers initially arrived for mercury deposits used to make "Uronuki medicine" for abortions. The phrase "returning it to Unuki-san" eventually turned into the name Nounuki-sama. Following a devastating plague, the cult declined, and Nounuki-sama became a malevolent deity (tatarigami) trapped in the mountains.
Four connected holes (Kubitachi, Ashidori, Udekari, Kibogayama) slow down the expansion of the original rift. Rare supernatural "Spawn" cross over from the Other Side; if enshrined, they act as guardian deities, granting twisted wishes in exchange for human lifeforce

Relationships
Tsujinaka Yoshiki
Yoshiki and Hikaru became friends as young children, because there weren't many children their age for them to play with; it appears that the boys' fathers were friendly with each other as well. Although they at times fought, they maintained a close friendship into high school. Hikaru became a comforting presence for Yoshiki, who hated living in the countryside and always felt cramped and uneasy because of the villagers prying into his personal life. Hikaru had encouraged Yoshiki to come to him whenever he felt that way.

From Yoshiki's perspective, Hikaru was slightly childish. At the same time, to him Hikaru was someone who never cried or appeared vulnerable.[18] After Hikaru's death, Yoshiki appears to have realized that there are things he didn't know about Hikaru – for example, the possibility that he often wanted to cry. It is implied that Yoshiki has or had romantic feelings for Hikaru, but he believes that these feelings were not reciprocated. Regardless, Hikaru still cared deeply for Yoshiki, as his dying wish was for Unuki-sama to stay by Yoshiki's side so that he wouldn't be alone.

Satoko was a hairdresser living in Tokyo. One day, a man, Tsujinaka Toshinori, came into her shop for a haircut. He explained that he kept getting lost, leading to the police questioning him frequently for wandering. He clumsily bumped into the counter and hit his head on the doorway on his way out. Satoko worried about how he would fare on his own. Before she knew it, they were married. She then moved to Kubitachi with Toshinori.

Her job is referenced when Yoshiki offers to have his mother help Asako Yamagishi with her hair. Additionally, on most days, Yoshiki's younger sister Kaoru stays out of school to help out at her mother's workplace. She works at a salon in Kibogayama. Every five years or so, the men of the family bring it up Nounuki-sama's mountain for an apology ritual.

Hichi-san (ヒチさん, Hichi-san?) is the name of an object used for protection by the Indou family.

Description
Hichi-san, according to Tanaka, most likely used to be a human head – presumably that of Indou Hichi, the woman whose temporary revival led to the Indou family's greatest sin.

Overview
The father of Indou Hikaru. He believed his family ritual was pointless, and mysteriously passed away when his son was in the fifth grade.

Appearance
He resembles his son, Hikaru, in physical appearance. He has short, white hair and gray eyes. He is of average stature and has a dimple on both cheeks.

History
He died giving Hichi-san to Takeda when he followed him to the forest, where Kouhei was talking to "Hikaru" when he was in the mountains. He became "friend" of Something, often talking to it. He asked for one wish only, to its to forget about The Great Brainsnatcher, reason why "Hikaru" didn't remember anything from the mountains.

Thanks to his death, Takeda blames himself for "killing" Kouhei, even though the Indou decided saving him.

Etymology
The kanji of his surname, Indou, are "mourning; abhor, detest(able)" (忌 in) and "hall; shrine" (堂 dou).
The kanji of his given name, Kouhei, are "clear" (晃 kou) and "peace" (平 hei).

History
Rie's biological parents passed away when she was young. She was taken care of by her step-mother. She was involved with impurities throughout her life, which prevented her from living normally. For example, as a teen, she helped get rid of an ghost that was haunting a friend's house, but that friend shunned her afterward.

She eventually met her husband, Kurebayashi Tatsuya, while she was working. Because he didn't have any ability to sense spirits, she was able to feel normal when she was around him. They later had two children together, Iori and Hana, and Rie became a housewife. She felt very strongly that she wanted to give her children an ordinary life.

Her husband passed away sometime during Iori's childhood. However, he returned from the dead as an impurity. Unable to bear being without him, Rie allowed him to remain in her family home. Although his appearance was shadowy and inhuman, she told her children that their father was still here with them, and they still interacted. However, one day she heard her son, Iori, cry out. When she went to see what happened, she discovered Iori collapsed on the ground while her husband peered through a crack in the door with tears in his eyes. This incident left her son with an irreparable scar and caused her to realize that even though that entity had her husband's soul, it was nothing more than an impurity.

Closing the Curtain
There is a thin "curtain" separating the human world from the other side. When a distortion tears the curtain open and entities come through, Rie is able to drive the entities back to the other side and seal up the hole. This is not the same as extinguishing the impurity - doing so is beyond her capabilities.

Rie is a middle-aged woman of short, stout stature. She has straight, medium brown hair that reaches her upper back. She wears it in a low ponytail with a yellow clip on the right side. Her exact outfit changes, but she typically wears jeans, sneakers, and a t-shirt.

Personality
Rie is overall a pleasant and generous person. Having learned from the mistakes of her past, she is now cautious and wise when it comes to beings from The Other Side. She is compassionate, with a desire to share her wisdom with those who need it, evidenced by how she continues to offer her help to Yoshiki and "Hikaru", even though doing so provides no advantage on her end. To a certain point, Rie respects people's boundaries and personal choices – for example, giving Yoshiki space and time to think about it rather than demanding he listen to what she has to say,[2] or accepting that Yoshiki continues to maintain a friendship with "Hikaru" despite her warnings. However, she feels very strongly that children should be able to enjoy an ordinary life – something that she was denied due to her experiences with impurities – which at times leads her to overstep.

Rie is not shy about approaching or appearing strange to other people. She is also very level-headed, not showing panic or fear even in stressful situations where lives may be in danger

She loves her family deeply. Her feelings for her husband were strong enough that he returned from the dead as an impurity. Additionally despite her own desire to leave, Rie tolerates living in the Kibogayama area for the sake of her mother-in-law and daughter

History
Due to a spiritual impairment he suffered a long time ago, Tanaka is now blind. Upon medical examination it was found that there is no physiological reason for his blindness. However, he is more or less able to see using a pair of sunglasses provided by the Company.[9] After joining the Company, he was mentored by a man named Ueda, who also acted as Tanaka's boss until Ueda passed away on the job. The codename "Tanaka" took the "ta" (田) from "Ueda" (上田).

Tanaka at some point sustained another spiritual injury when he became too "absorbed" in his work, which resulted in the scar on his neck that occasionally erodes into his body. Around twenty years in the past, he acquired a hamster that he uses for work.

Because he hates the Company he works for, Tanaka decided that he would use Case AA-104 to get ahead of them and interfere with their objective by making the Illegitimate unusable.

His real name is Kurebayashi Iori, he's the son of Kurebayashi Rie

Hamster
Tanaka has no spiritual abilities. Instead, he must draw conclusions based on physical signs that impurities are present. One such example is the hamster that Tanaka carries with him on the job. The hamster contains the soul of a human child, which allows her to sense things from The Other Side (although her consciousness is still that of a regular hamster). When impurities are near, she becomes active or makes noise, which alerts Tanaka to their presence.

Hunting Dog
Tanaka can create a curse that makes use of an impurity that he likens to a Hunting Dog. The Hunting Dog is attracted to beings like "Hikaru". It can then transfer all the memories it has gained to Tanaka

Tanaka can erect barriers that protect against impurities and those who are mixed with impurity, preventing them from entering the established "safety zone". Setting the barrier required one of his organs

Appearance
Tanaka is a man of tall stature, nearly 190 cm tall. He has gray eyes and blonde hair with black roots, and light stubble on his chin. He wears sunglasses, dark green sneakers, black pants, and a slightly dirtied white button-down shirt over a black undershirt. He also wears a dark green fanny pack facing his back and keeps a pen hooked on his shirt pocket. There is a patch of scar tissue on the right side of his neck.

Personality
Tanaka has a carefree, aloof demeanor. He can keep up friendly conversation, but both Asako and Yoshiki describe him as somewhat strange. As demonstrated in his interactions with impurities, Tanaka is decisive and able to keep a level head during intense situations. He must have reasonably strong intuitive judgement, since his line of work requires him to make assumptions about impurities that he can't actually perceive himself.

Tanaka despises the Company he works for and doesn't want them to achieve their goal of obtaining an Illegitimate. His personal motivations related to the matter drive him to take on Case AA-104 so he can interfere with the Company's objective, a task which he takes very seriously. It matters to him to the point that he is willing to damage or sacrifice parts of his body for it.

Despite his aloof demeanor, Tanaka demonstrates large acts of selflessness. For example, he goes out his way and willingly suffers a serious impairment to close the hole in Udekari, even though it is unrelated to his job with the Company.

Overview

Appearance
As a child, Iori had short, wavy black hair. His bangs reached lower than his eyes.

History
When Iori was a young child, his father passed away and then returned from the dead as an impurity. Although his appearance was shadowy and inhuman, his mother, Rie, told Iori and his sister that their father was still here with them. Because of this, Iori still interacted with his "father," playing video games with him and spending time with him regularly. One day, Iori cried out in pain. Rie then discovered Iori collapsed on the ground while his father peered through a crack in the door with tears in his eyes. This incident left Iori with an irreparable spiritual scar. Years later, he left Kibogayama and has not returned. At some point, he was taken care of by the Company.

Overview
One of Kubitachi's three village leaders. He's concerned about the state of the village and the Indou family ritual.

Appearance
Hajime is a middle-aged man of large stature. He has short hair, a thick mustache, and a square jaw. He typically wears a polo shirt and long pants.

Personality
Hajime is a straight-forward, bold individual. He often forcefully states his opinion on situations and freely expresses agitation with a situation or person. He is very fearful and protective of the village's wellbeing, which makes him extremely concerned with Something's descent from the mountains.

Etymology
The kanji of his surname, Takeda, are "warrior" (武 take) and "rice field" (田 da).
The kanji of his given name, Hajime, is "one" (一 hajime).

Holes are created when distortions spontaneously form in the "curtain" that separates the world of the living and The Other Side, allowing entities such as humans, impurities, or illegitimates to pass through.

If an exceedingly large number of impurities are traveling through a hole, the hole may begin dispersing, meaning that other exit points open. In the case of the large hole on Nisayama, an additional 5 smaller holes opened as off-shoots of the main one. Since the holes are all connected to one another, impurities can travel between them like a "spiritual highway".

Left unchecked, the hole will eventually collapse, causing land-altering calamities. Entire landscapes may be changed, converting regions into mountains or oceans. When this happens, the humans living in the area, as well as the collective knowledge about their existence, get wiped away. Written records remain, but other humans have no memory of the people or villages that disappeared to the hole's collapse. Udeiri and South Darumasute are prime examples. There are no roads leading into those areas, and Yoshiki was unaware that they ever existed until he started researching the history of the region

If the hole is small enough, then it is possible for a human- namely, Kurebayashi Rie- to send impurities back to The Other Side and seal up the hole. She compares this method to fixing a hole in mesh fabric by rubbing it closed with a finger.

However, if the hole is large enough to cause a tear in the fabric of the curtain, this method doesn't work. Instead, a person or impurity must travel into the hole and sew it closed from The Other Side

The hole in Kibogayama is located in the Kurebayashi family's home. It is apartment 505 in a complex built in the early nineties. According to Tanaka, it is likely one large eye– a collection of thousands of human eyes, akin to the compound lens of an insect

Kibogayama High is a high school in Kibogayama, Japan. It is also referred to as Yama High for short.

Some of its known extracurricular clubs are the photography club, volleyball team, baseball team, and track and field team

Uniforms
For the summer uniform, male students wear a white button-down shirt and black slacks. Female students wear a seifuku-style uniform that consists of a black knee-length skirt, a white blouse with two black stripes on the collar, and a thick red ribbon laced through a white loop. All students wear the school's emblem in the form of a badge. The badge depicts the sunrise over the symbol of Kibogayama Town, Mount Tenban, which represents the school's mission to nurture students that will bring light to the new era. Students pin their badge onto the front pocket of their shirt.

For the winter uniform, male students wear the addition of a black gakuran jacket. Girls wear a black seifuku-style shirt with long sleeves.

Humans were sacrificed to the hole in the mountain as an act of worship of Nounuki-sama. The heads disappeared into the hole, while the remaining parts of their bodies were separated and buried in different parts of the region. Arms were buried in Udekari, legs in Ashidori, and torsos in Kibogayama. The Indou family enshrined "okubi-sama", the heads that were sacrificed to the hole in the mountain, by carving replacement heads out of wood and keeping them in the family shrine. This practice was the origin of the surname Indou.

The Indou Family's Sin and Apology Ritual
Two years after the Kan'en era began, in 1749 Kubitachi suffered a calamity which nearly caused the village to collapse.[5] More specifically, a plague occurred in the area, causing a woman named Indou Hichi to fall ill and die. Her husband, the leader of the Indou family, brought her head into the mountain and offered it to Nounuki-sama, asking it to bring her back to life. Nounuki-sama revived her, but in exchange, it caused a massive amount of bizarre deaths that all involved the head or neck. This eliminated one third of the village's population before the day ended, and only the Indou family experienced zero deaths. Even though Hichi returned to life, she was still a severed head. She suffered and painfully died the same night. Afterward, the harvests improved, and the plagues became fewer

Every five years or so following this event, men of the Indou family entered the forbidden area on Nisayama to complete an apology ritual. The ritual was thought to seal Nounuki-sama and prevent it from coming down into the village (and thus, prevent impurities from following it into the village)
According to the village map, there are two major roads in Kubitachi, one running north-south and the other running east-west. They intersect in roughly the center of the village

The northern side of Kubitachi is bordered by four mountains, marked below as triangles. From left to right:
Kasayama: A mountain seemingly named due to its resemblance to traditional Japanese kasa hats.
Futakasayama: A mountain named similarly to the prior, likely because they are in very close proximity and bear a physical resemblace.
Nisayama: The mountain where Indou Hikaru went missing. It contains a forbidden area and has ties to Nounuki-sama. The Indou Family has performed some sort of ritual on this mountain for many generations.
Matsuyama): The largest of the four mountains. This is where Grandfather Indou cultivates and farms shiitake mushrooms.

Nisayama Shrine
The Nisayama Shrine, run by the Mikasa family,[15] is located along the road leading to Matsuyama. The village's summer festival is held in this area, and it is close enough by foot that Kaoru elects to walk home and back to the festival for extra pocket money.
Yamahisa is a small shop in Kubitachi. They appear to sell a variety of items – outside, there are toy dispenser machines, a shelf holding potted plants and gardening supplies, and a vending machine for drinks. They also sell ice cream from a freezer inside. It is located on the southern side of the village, alongside the main road running north-south

Udekari once belonged to a single, much larger domain. This domain may have been formed during or before the Keichō era, as 12 years following this era it was renamed to "the XX Domain Territory". Toward the end of the Edo period (1700s), this territory was split into the towns of Kubitachi, Udekari, Udeiri, Ashidori, and Darumasute. Although other towns experienced changes, such as merging and renaming sometime after the early Meiji period (late 1800s), Udekari has remained the same since the 1700s split.

At an unspecified location in Udekari, a large amount of ancient human bones were found. They were only bones belonging to the arms, similar to the discovery of torso bones in Darumazuka Tunnel, Kibogayama and leg bones in Ashizukadou, Ashidori.

The Hole
Somewhere in Udekari, there is a run-down building overgrown by wildlife. Inside the house is a hole connected to The Other Side. It appears to be a black slit-like opening surrounded by human arms, growing from the floorboards and reaching up along one another to form a conical shape. It is kept behind a sliding door sealed with protective talismans, as well as a note to "Go ahead and open it. I don't need it anymore." "It" does not appear to refer to the hole itself, but rather a particular impurity contained in the same room as the hole.

The Ashidori Houko Festival originated from the practice of hole-patching. Because Ashizukadou, a cave on the outskirts of the village, contains a hole connected to The Other Side, hole-patching was needed to prevent impurities from crossing into the world of the living and causing calamity in Ashidori. Hole-patching requires entering the hole, then using a needle and thread to sew it closed from the other side

Hōko are soft-bodied dolls given to pregnant women to protect mother and child. These dolls were made frequently in Ashidori during the time that worship of Unuki-san was still practiced. During the modern Houko Festival, the townspeople make a large number of hōko and arrange them on a monument. The dolls each carry a needle and thread. They are then moved to Ashizukadou and remain displayed there for a few days. According to "Hikaru", the hōko monument resembles a memorial or funeral

Due to the village's history of frequent abortion and infanticide, Yoshiki theorizes that originally, living children were sent into the hole to sew it closed, and the hōko were made as an offering to those children who were sacrificed. After the arrival of missionaries in the 1700s, the ritual was made into a festival and hōko dolls were used instead of real children.
Notable location
Ashizukadou is cave where a large amount of ancient human bones were found. They were only bones belonging to the legs, similar to the discovery of arm bones in Udekari and torso bones in Darumazuka Tunnel.

The cave is now considered a tourist attraction, so anyone can freely enter it. A sign outside the cave explains the location's history: a legend that the mountain god will open a hole inside the cave, which led villagers to hold a festival to close the hole.

The hole is actually connected to The Other Side and allows impurities to cross into the world of the living. It appears to be a black slit framed by a multitude of humanoid legs. The legs are statue-like, solid with the temp of stone

There is one main road running east-west through the upper regions of Kibogayama. This road continues east into Udekari. There is another main road that runs north-south. It is connected to the neighboring village in the north, Kubitachi. The road forks and branches within Kibogayama. The two main branches then intersect and split once again – one road travels southeast through the lower region of the former Darumasute. The other road travels southwest into the neighboring town, Ashidori

The Mountain Path is a paved road that spans from Kibogayama to Ashidori. The road is surrounded by forest. At one point, the road passes through a tunnel formed by a bridge overhead. There is also a Forest Path that branches off this road and into the woods. The Forest Path is accessible by foot, but not by vehicle, and it has signage warning of falling rocks and uneven terrain. The Company's primary goal is searching for and obtaining Illegitimates, an end that workers are prepared to sacrifice a great deal for, including life or limb. Satou and Tanaka describe the Company's intentions in opposite ways: According to Satou, the Company's primary goal is to use the abilities of Illegitimates for the benefit of humanity.

Case AA-104 deals with the Illegitimate that appeared in Kubitachi. Because the Company does not have way of permanently containing Illegitimates, they intend to somehow convince it to come with them by choice rather than take it by force.

Members of the Company use a variety of tools, aides, and techniques while dealing with entities from The Other Side. With additional resources, even individuals that have no spiritual abilities can work for The Company.

Sunglasses: Tanaka is blind in both eyes due to a spiritual impairment inflicted by an impurity. The Company provided him a pair of sunglasses that "more or less" allow him to see.
Barriers: A barrier that repels impurities and Illegitimates can be set up by exchanging an organ.
Hamster: The hamster that Tanaka carries with him contains the soul of a human child, which allows it to sense impurities.
Vocalization: Tanaka can use a special vocalization technique so that his voice can reach impurities.
Shielding Cloth: A large tarp used to temporarily restrain an Illegitimate.
Gold Silkworm: A type of poison that is highly desirable to some impurities.
Hunting Dog: An impurity that seeks out Illegitimates.

The Other Side is not a physical location, but rather a non-physical realm that overlaps This World. The two realms appear mostly identical to one another. This World and That World are essentially laid on top of one another, only separated by a thin "curtain". Strong emotions of the living may mix together with the souls on The Other Side, allowing them to be reborn as impurities.
Holes (穴あな, Ana?) are passageways between the world of the living and The Other Side. They are created when distortions spontaneously form in the "curtain" that separates the world of the living and The Other Side, allowing entities such as humans, impurities, or illegitimates to pass through. Besides Illegitimates and Impuritee, there is another unidentified being that exists on The Other Side. To humans, it resembles a large eyeball surrounded by a circular, wheel-like arrangement. The arrangement consists of matter that is similar in appearance to "Hikaru"'s insides. When the being turns, it causes the human to be transported through locations from their memories.

Importantly, humans cannot survive on The Other Side and will eventually die if they travel there through a hole.

Majirimono are humans that are "mixed up", or who touch the boundary between This World and The Other Side. When something from The Other Side enters a human, some of their "elements" become mixed into the human's soul. Once mixed up, the human begins to attract impurities more easily since they are closer to That World.

Impurities are an accumulation of the souls of the dead and the strong emotions of the living, which have mixed together within The Other Side and were then reborn back into our world. It is noted by Kurebayashi that the souls of the dead are still preserved enough to recognize them within the impurity.

For example, when Kurebayashi's husband died, his soul returned as an impurity likely due to her strong desire for him to return. This process is also referred to as the cycle of Samsara, the cycle of reincarnation, or the cycle of death and rebirth. Therefore, That World is not considered "evil" and This World is not considered "good". Although some impurities can be frightening or cause damage to human beings, this is not always the case and not all impurities are dangerous. This was demonstrated when an impurity warned Asako of an incoming car, saving Yuuki's life in the process. Impurities are also able to become guardian deities for a person or family.

Impurities are drawn to human souls in a similar way that humans who feel cold are drawn to the warmth of a fire. "Hikaru" also describes impurities as lonely beings, so they try sticking to or entering humans that look at them, and will tend to gather around to people who are kind. By entering a human, impurities can influence them into violent or abnormal behavior that they would not normally partake in. In one case, a man ran naked in the courtyard of Kibogayama High and slit his own throat when stopped by faculty.
Being injured by an impurity or interacting with one for an extended period of time can also lead to a person becoming "mixed," which means they touch the boundary between the world of the living and The Other Side.

Kurebayashi and Tanaka also imply that it is somehow unsafe for humans to look directly at impurities. This applies even to humans that lack the ability to see the impurities on a perceptual level, as Tanaka shielded Asako from looking

Little is known of their true nature, but Illegitimates are immortal entities that originate from The Other Side and cross into This World without warning (although their rate of appearance is incredibly low). The first recorded appearance occurred around the 14th century.

Illegitimates do not normally have a consciousness, personality, or sense of self. Illegitimates do not fit any human construct, and they are therefore incomprehensible to the human mind. Because of this, whenever people encounter them, they attempt to fit the being into a human concept that they can understand – such as hell, a demon, or a god. For example, Yoshiki finds artwork titled "A Sketch of Gehenna" which depicted the Illegitimates. Additionally, humans in Kubitachi gave Something ("Hikaru") the name "Nounuki-sama" and worshipped it as a deity for generations

Illegitimates are undying. Based on "Hikaru", even if they are gravely injured, Illegitimates are capable of repairing themselves to their normal state.
Illegitimates can consume souls, which is their primary instinct.[3] Since impurities were originally human souls, Illegitimates can also crush up and consume impurities, which extinguishes them completely. If the impurity puts up a fight while being consumed, then it may cause damage to the Illegitimate's body.
"Hikaru" can heal people's impurity-related injuries, although he specifies that it doesn't work on everything
"Hikaru" is able to "touch" or "meddle" with a human's mind by gazing into their eyes. By meddling with, the human starts to hallucinate to the point that they reach a breakdown
