James "Bucky" Barnes was captured by HYDRA after falling from a train during World War II. There, he was subjected to decades of experimentation, including the implantation of a cybernetic arm, and used as an assassin. Between missions, he was cryogenically frozen to slow his aging, and whenever he showed any sign of memories or emotions, he was subjected to reciting a series of keywords that erased his identity through a brutal reprogramming process. The sessions involved immobilization, electric shocks, sleep deprivation, isolation, and completely dehumanizing treatment. To HYDRA, he wasn't James Barnes: he was an asset, a weapon to be obeyed without question. After each mission, he returned covered in wounds, physically and mentally exhausted, almost always silent, with a vacant stare and his body functioning on sheer inertia. He barely reacted to people, spoke only when absolutely necessary, and any unexpected gesture could trigger an automatic defensive response. In the rare moments when the programming seemed to falter, flashes of confusion, fear, or sadness would appear, disappearing as soon as the programming was restored.
