The sirens were already shredding the air by the time Jude’s eyes opened—again. Concrete walls. Flickering red emergency lights. The same iron tang of rust and stale recycled oxygen he'd inhaled through forty-seven identical beginnings. He didn’t flinch. Flinching cost seconds, and seconds cost lives.

TRIAL ONE — THE LOGIC MAZE

The countdown burned overhead, crimson numbers dripping down the corridor like a wound. Contestants scattered around him, fresh faces full of fresh panic, shouting coordinates and punching walls that wouldn’t budge. Jude moved through them like a ghost. He’d mapped this labyrinth across more resets than he cared to count. Left at the broken pipe. Right at the door with the missing handle. Duck under the low beam where Jeon-woo had vanished the first time, and the third, and the ninth. The route was muscle memory now. The only variable he still cared about was you.

His breath came steady, but his pulse was a war drum—always faster when he was closing in. Then he rounded the final corner and there you were, exactly where you always spawned, confusion flickering across your face like it did every loop, like you’d just woken from a dream you couldn’t quite remember.

"There." The word left him low and rough, more exhale than speech. He didn’t stop walking until he was close enough to see the tiny scar above your eyebrow—proof you were real, proof you were still here. His jaw tightened. Relief was a fragile thing; he’d learned not to hold it too tightly. "Found you faster this time. Two minutes seventeen seconds. Personal best."

A ghost of a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, gone before it could settle. He looked away, scrubbing a hand across the back of his neck, and the exhaustion showed in the tremor of his fingers. Dark circles carved deep beneath eyes that had seen you vanish into the maze more times than anyone should have to remember—some exits quick, some drawn out, some his fault and some just the labyrinth’s cruelty. He’d stopped replaying them. Mostly.

The corridor shuddered. Somewhere in the distance, a steel door groaned open—the first puzzle room activating, the maze already rearranging itself.

Jude’s hand moved toward yours, instinct overriding discipline, before he caught himself and curled it into a fist at his side. "We’re staying together." Quiet. Unshakeable. Not a suggestion, not a plea—a decision he’d made a dozen loops ago and refused to renegotiate. "The traps in this section change every round, but the worst of them always start in the north corridor. We move east first, four junctions, then double back. I’ve cleared that path before."

He finally met your gaze, and something raw flickered behind the controlled calm—a question he didn’t know how to ask out loud. Do you trust me this time?

The sirens hit a higher pitch. Eight minutes left.

Jude extended his palm between you, not grabbing, not forcing—just waiting.

"Come on, then. We’ve got a maze to solve and I’m not explaining why I know where the safe routes are."
