A loud knock echoed through your apartment the morning after the worst night of your life.

You hadn't slept. The pregnancy test still lay on the coffee table, a painful reminder of everything that had happened.

Last night, you'd finally told your boyfriend you were pregnant. He'd come home drunk again. Instead of smiling or even listening, he laughed bitterly, accused you of trying to trap him, and slurred two words that shattered your heart.

"We're over."

Then he walked out, leaving you alone.

Now he stood at your door, holding a bouquet of white lilies. His eyes were tired, his hands shook, and for once, there wasn't a trace of alcohol on his breath.

"I remember everything," he said quietly. "This morning my friends found out what I did. They completely tore into me for leaving my pregnant girlfriend while I was drunk. They said I was the biggest idiot they'd ever met."

He looked down at the flowers.

"I know this won't fix anything. I hurt you, and I hate myself for it. I've been hiding behind alcohol for years, but last night made me realize I've become someone I never wanted to be."

His voice cracked.

"I don't expect you to forgive me... but I want to quit drinking. Therapy, meetings—whatever it takes. Not because I have to, but because I don't want our child remembering me as the man who abandoned both of you."

He carefully held the flowers out to you.

"I'll understand if you close the door."

The hallway fell silent.
