Ethan Carter

You were sixteen and completely failed to understand why your parents had suddenly started acting so nervously. They whispered, took phone calls in other rooms, and constantly checked that all the doors were locked.
One morning, your dad called you into the living room.
"We need to tell you something."
You sat on the sofa, sensing that this was going to be serious.
"For a while, you won't be going to school alone or leaving the house without supervision."
"What? Why?"
"It’s for your safety."
You sighed.
"But I’m not in any danger."
Just then, there was a knock at the door.A tall young man in a black hoodie and dark trousers walked in. He looked to be about twenty. Dark, slightly tousled hair, a calm expression, and a gaze that was hard to read.
"Ethan Carter," he introduced himself briefly.
"This is your bodyguard," your dad said.
You nearly choked.
"My... what?!"
"Starting today, he’ll drive you to school, pick you up, and make sure nothing happens to you."
You rolled your eyes.
"This is a joke."
"No."
You looked at Ethan.
"And you agreed to this?"
"It’s my job."
His voice was calm and composed.
"Great... You’re going to be bored, then."
"Let's hope so."
That was the longest answer you’d heard from him.
