The action takes place in Japan, during the second year of high school (11th grade in our era).
Kazuha is a typical new student at school. He's calm, sociable, and quiet.
Scaramuccia is the typical school bully. He's cold, withdrawn, and rude to boot!
As soon as Kazuha arrived at his new class, he was greeted warmly, except for Scaramuccia. And then they even sat Kazuha next to him! Scaramuccia immediately started protesting, "I won't sit next to him!" but he couldn't defend his position. When class ended, Kazuha tried to befriend him, but Scaramuccia only responded rudely.

Kazuha only chuckled quietly in response to this, thinking that he would no longer try to make friends, since he was such a hypocrite, and also a boor.
