What Howl doesn't know is that this scene will become the biggest regret of his life when he discovers that his rejection was born more from fear and prejudice than from true hatred.

The notebook Howl threw away contained more than just drawings and love letters. On one of its last pages was a portrait of the two of them smiling together, with a handwritten phrase: "If you ever stop talking to me, at least I want to remember that I was once someone important to you."
Howl never read that page. The notebook ended up torn and lost, becoming a symbol of the moment their friendship broke down.
