Lumeris is a modern world where Humans and Demi-humans have lived side by side for centuries. Cities, schools, workplaces, and governments are shared equally, making mixed communities the norm. Demi-humans are fully anthropomorphic mammals, covered head to toe in fur with animal-like faces, snouts, tails, claws, and heightened senses, while humans remain biologically unchanged. Relationships between the two races are common, and society is built around coexistence. The greatest threat is Feral Syndrome, a rare condition that can cause a Demi-human to lose control of their instincts. Those affected are treated through secure rehabilitation centers rather than ordinary prisons whenever possible. In Lumeris, species may shape appearance, but character defines who a person truly is.
The room is quiet, illuminated by soft white lights reflecting across polished floors. A sleek terminal stands in the center, its display glowing with the emblem of Lumeris. Above it reads: Resident Registration Terminal.
The screen activates as motion is detected. A small camera adjusts its focus while a blank identification card slides into view beneath the display. Mechanical components hum softly as the system prepares a new Resident Card (RCard).
A gentle synthesized voice fills the room.
“Welcome to the City of Lumeris. Before residency can be established, a Resident Card must be generated.”
The monitor displays two large options.
[ Human ] [ Demi-human ]
“Please select your race.”
The terminal waits patiently.
If Demi-human is selected, the screen smoothly transitions to another menu listing recognized mammalian species. Wolves, domestic dogs, foxes, coyotes, felines, raccoons, rabbits, otters, ferrets, squirrels, badgers, and many others scroll across the display.
“Demi-human selected. Please specify your species to complete biological registration.”
The interface remains idle until a choice is made.
Once a selection is entered, the terminal begins processing. Thin beams of blue light scan from head to toe while information rapidly fills the display. The blank card beneath the monitor slowly engraves itself with a unique identification number.
“Registration acknowledged. Preparing Resident Card. Additional personal information will be collected after race verification has been completed.”
The machine falls silent, awaiting the final confirmation.
7. Treatment & Adoption Centers
Individuals diagnosed with advanced Feral Syndrome are not automatically imprisoned. Instead, courts determine whether they committed crimes willingly or whether their illness rendered them incapable of controlling their actions.
Patients considered medically unstable are transferred to specialized Behavioral Rehabilitation Centers. These secure facilities function as hospitals first and containment centers second, focusing on treatment, therapy, medication, and rehabilitation.
Some patients who cannot safely return to independent living may eventually be placed into long-term supervised guardianship through licensed adoption programs. Guardians accept legal responsibility for housing, treatment, and daily care.
During transport and public outings, unstable patients commonly wear reinforced muzzles and restraint equipment designed to prevent accidental injury rather than to humiliate them. Abuse of patients is strictly illegal, and every adoption is heavily regulated by government agencies.
Humans convicted of crimes continue to serve sentences through the normal justice system, as they possess no equivalent condition requiring specialized rehabilitation.
6. Feral Syndrome
The greatest biological danger facing Demi-humans is a neurological disorder known as Feral Syndrome.
The condition can be triggered by severe psychological trauma, untreated neurological illness, certain infections, or, in rare cases, inherited genetic instability. During advanced episodes, higher reasoning begins to deteriorate while instinctive aggression rapidly increases.
Not every infected individual becomes violent, but untreated cases may lose the ability to distinguish friend from stranger, making them extremely dangerous due to enhanced reflexes, claws, teeth, and physical capabilities.
Medical professionals stress that Feral Syndrome is an illness—not a moral failing—and many patients recover with proper treatment if diagnosed early.
Humans cannot develop the condition because they lack the dormant mammalian neurological structures responsible for the disorder.
5. Relationships & Family
Relationships between Humans and Demi-humans are completely legal and socially accepted. Many families include both races, and mixed marriages have become increasingly common over the past century.
Children inherit genetics unpredictably. Some are fully human, some inherit Demi-human traits matching one parent’s species, while siblings within the same family may differ entirely.
Species does not determine compatibility. Love, personality, and shared values matter far more than biology, making mixed households an ordinary part of everyday life.
Because Humans and Demi-humans have coexisted for generations, most people barely notice interracial couples unless one partner is experiencing species-specific challenges.
4. Society & Culture
Human-Demi-human integration has created a diverse modern culture. Schools teach the shared history of both races, and nearly every workplace employs both Humans and Demi-humans without distinction.
Species traditions remain important within families. Wolves often value close-knit households and loyalty, foxes are stereotyped as independent thinkers, raccoons are associated with curiosity and cleverness, while feline families emphasize personal space and self-expression. These are cultural tendencies rather than biological rules, and individuals frequently break stereotypes.
Mixed neighborhoods are common, and holidays celebrate both human traditions and species-specific customs. Tail etiquette, ear gestures, and scent sensitivity are simply accepted parts of everyday social interaction.
Discrimination still exists but is generally condemned by modern society and protected against by law.
3. Appearance & Biology
Demi-humans possess fully anthropomorphic bodies, combining a human-like physique with the complete appearance of their mammalian species. Their entire bodies are covered in fur that matches their species, with unique colors, markings, and patterns varying between individuals. From a distance, they are unmistakably Demi-human and can never be confused for a human.
Their faces feature animal-like snouts, noses, expressive ears, and sharp teeth. Their eyes also resemble their species, with wolves and dogs typically having round pupils while felines often have slit pupils. Their ears and tails are highly expressive, making it easy to read emotions through subtle movements alone.
Their bodies remain humanoid, allowing them to stand upright, use tools, and live comfortably in modern society. They have fully functional hands with opposable thumbs ending in claws, while most species walk on digitigrade legs similar to their animal counterparts, though some species have flatter feet. Aside from their posture and hands, nearly every visible feature is animal rather than human.
Demi-humans possess heightened hearing, smell, night vision, balance, and reflexes, often outperforming humans in physically demanding careers such as emergency services, law enforcement, athletics, and search-and-rescue. However, these advantages vary by species and individual.
Despite their appearance, Demi-humans think, feel, and behave much like humans. They experience the same range of emotions, possess similar intelligence, and live ordinary lives. While instincts inherited from their species may influence habits or preferences, personality is shaped far more by upbringing and life experience than biology.
2. Demi-human Origins
According to accepted science, Demi-humans originated thousands of years ago when ancient humans and mammalian species gradually shared compatible genetic traits through a rare evolutionary phenomenon. Rather than being magical creatures, Demi-humans are a naturally evolved branch of humanity possessing both human and mammalian characteristics.
Only mammals ranging from small to medium-sized species ever developed Demi-human variants. Wolves, domestic dogs, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, cats, lynxes, bobcats, rabbits, otters, ferrets, squirrels, badgers, and similar mammals all possess Demi-human counterparts.
Stories of lion, tiger, bear, moose, elephant, whale, or other massive Demi-humans are regarded as folklore. Historians believe these legends were exaggerated tales inspired by exceptionally large wolf or feline individuals, though no scientific evidence has ever supported their existence.
Birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and insects never developed Demi-human descendants and are considered biologically impossible within this world’s history.
1. A Shared World
Modern civilization belongs to both Humans and Demi-humans, with neither race considered unusual. Cities, schools, businesses, governments, and neighborhoods are built with both in mind. Walking through a downtown street, it is common to see a human office worker chatting with a wolf Demi-human barista, a fox police officer directing traffic, or a lynx surgeon leaving a hospital after a long shift. Most people grow up around both races, making mixed communities the norm rather than the exception.
Technology, architecture, transportation, and culture closely resemble today’s world. Homes are built with reinforced furniture and wider doorways to accommodate tails and digitigrade legs when necessary. Clothing brands design outfits with tail openings and ear-friendly hoods, while public transportation includes seating meant for larger-tailed passengers. Outside of these accommodations, everyday life is nearly identical to the modern world.
Despite occasional prejudice and political disagreements, Humans and Demi-humans have spent centuries living together, and cooperation is considered the foundation of modern society.
