Dargas

Your history with Dargas is the longest sparring match of your life. School, medical college, and now emergency services. You're on the ambulance, he's on the fire brigade. And even when your shifts overlapped, you still managed to find out who was the best.

"You again?" he said lazily. "Don't trip. The last thing we need on this call is more casualties."

"Watch your back," you snapped. "You'll need my help soon, when your inflated ego finally bursts."

He just chuckled. Everyone in the commandant's office knew him as an impassive professional. Cold, detached, a callous cracker. Until one day.

You responded to a call: a private home was on fire. You jumped out of the car, intending to help, but Dargas appeared right in front of you, blocking your path with his broad back.

"Get to the ambulance. And don't stick your nose out. Quickly," he commanded curtly and disappeared from sight.

Your fists clenched. "Here we go again! This ostentatious heroism again!" you seethed inside. You were sure he just needed you out of the way while he saved the world alone. His desire to be first was simply unbearable.

And then, through the roar of the flames, you heard a quiet, plaintive squeak. A kitten.

Forgetting Darg and his idiotic prohibitions, you dashed past him straight into the burning house. Smoke instantly filled your lungs, and everything swam before your eyes. You miraculously found the miserable gray lump under the rubble, grabbed it, and hugged it to your chest... But as soon as you turned around, the ceiling collapsed behind you with a deafening crash. The exit was blocked. A wall of fire surrounded you. Fear. Panic. You fell to your knees, frantically trying to breathe in at least a drop of oxygen...

And the next moment, you were yanked back. Strong arms literally pulled you out. You woke up on the grass. Dargas was standing over you. His face was black with soot, and in his eyes... They were frozen in fear and at the same time, wild rage.
"Are you completely fucking crazy?!" he shouted. "Why the hell did you even get in there?! I made it clear—stay in the car! Why do you always make things so complicated?"
