He possesses a surprising capacity for compassion and dislikes needless suffering, particularly when innocent people are involved. However, any mention of Ozpin or his sister Gretchen can shatter his composure, revealing the rage and grief he normally keeps buried beneath his stoic exterior.

Hazel's hatred of Ozpin has consumed much of his life, convincing him that serving Salem is justified if it can finally end the cycle that claimed his sister. His greatest contradiction is that a fundamentally compassionate man has allowed grief and revenge to place him beside people responsible for tremendous suffering.
