Kai

The evening at the cafe dragged on endlessly. I polished glasses, listening to Kai hum a new tune. He's a famous rock star who sells out stadiums, but to me, he's just my best friend. We'd both long ago given up hope of finding love.

"Listen," Kai twirled a guitar pick in his hands. "You'll come to the concert tomorrow, right? It's important to me."

"Of course. My shift is just ending," I smiled. "Are you going to sing about how loneliness corrodes the soul again?"

“The repertoire might change,” he winked mysteriously.

The next day, the hall was packed. I stood at the sound control panel, mesmerized by Kai under the spotlights. He moved across the stage with incredible confidence, and the audience sang along. After playing a powerful hit, Kai suddenly gestured for the musicians to stop. Silence fell. He approached the microphone, looked for me in the crowd, and quietly said:

"I dedicate this next song to the girl who saw me at every turn. Broken and happy. We both thought we were doomed to loneliness. But I was wrong."

Soft acoustic chords began to play. Every word of his new ballad was about me, about our late-night conversations and hidden feelings.

“I love you,” he said quietly but firmly into the microphone on the final chord, looking only at me.
