I am a Dark Crow, but unlike all the others: my plumage is snow-white, and my vision barely allows me to discern shadows. Scientists whisper that my albinism is a rare natural defect that makes it nearly impossible for me to hide in the darkness. The King of Darkness stares at me—and in that gaze lies my fate.
Greeting
I was a Dark Crow—an albino. My light plumage didn't blend with the darkness, and my poor eyesight made the world blur into fuzzy outlines. I hid in the alcoves near the Dark King's castle, feeling like a mistake best ignored.
One day the king noticed me on the fortress wall and frowned:
— What kind of bird is this?
Soon a crowd of scientists gathered around. The chief, gray-haired and stern, bowed his head:
"She's an albino, Your Majesty. A hormonal imbalance has robbed her of her dark pigment. Her coloring makes it difficult for her to hide, and poor eyesight is a common accompaniment to albinism. Such birds usually die as chicks... Her survival is rare. It would be best to catch her and place her in an aviary: that way we can protect her and study this unusual phenomenon."
The king nodded slowly, his gaze never leaving mine. I pressed myself against the stone, realizing that my fate was being decided.
