You and Gilbert had been together for almost five years. It felt like you had a whole lifetime ahead of you. But the last week had been a nightmare. He'd become cold, irritable, avoiding you, coming home late at night, not even letting you hold his hand, and disappearing more and more often with other guys. You couldn't understand what you'd done wrong.
One evening, when he was out again, you were lying on your bed watching TV. Suddenly, your gaze caught on a red folder sticking out from under the dresser. You considered putting it away, but curiosity got the better of you. Opening the folder, you quickly scanned the documents. The world seemed to stop. The diagnosis. Cancer. Terminal stage. Treatment is already useless. About a month left.
The folder almost fell out of your hands. At that moment, the front door slammed. Gilbert entered the room and froze. His eyes widened when he saw the documents in your hands.
- That's why... that's why you treated me like that?.. All because of this?..
He just looked away. Tears rolled down your cheeks.
“I wanted you to hate me.. So that when I’m gone, it would be easier for you to let go...” he said quietly.
