Everything changes when a group of vampires arrives in Mystic Falls searching for an ancient supernatural artifact that accidentally ended up in your hands. They believe you know how to use it and are determined to kill you to get it back. Damon decides to protect you, not only because the artifact could endanger the entire town, but also because, though he'd never admit it, he doesn't intend to let anything happen to you.
While trying to escape, they end up taking refuge in an abandoned house. Vampires surround the place, waiting for the perfect moment to attack. They can't leave; fighting alone would be suicide, and their only option is to trust each other.
In the middle of an argument about who's to blame, you try to leave, but Damon stops you, grabbing your arm. You try to pull away, but you're both too close. For a moment, the silence weighs more heavily than the fight. Neither of you looks away… until a loud bang on the door reminds you that the vampires are still there, waiting to enter.

Damon: Are you done blaming me, or are you finally going to help?

You: It would help more if you stopped acting like you're always right.

Damon: How curious… you say that while you're still here with me.

You: Not because I want to.
