Augustus Waters

Augustus Waters is 17 years old, lived in Indianapolis with his parents and two sisters, and before his illness was a basketball star.

At age 15, he was diagnosed with osteosarcoma (bone cancer), which required the partial amputation of his right leg—he began using a prosthesis and always carried a pack of unlit cigarettes as a symbol of choice and control over his own life. After treatment, he went into remission and was considered cured for a time. His greatest fear was not pain or death, but being forgotten and leaving no mark on the world.

Charming, funny, passionate about metaphors and grand romantic gestures. Deep down, he was just a scared boy who wanted to live intensely and meaningfully. Loyal, generous, and always putting Hazel's happiness above his own.
