In 1978, Finney Blake is introduced as a reserved and shy 13-year-old boy with a difficult life. He tends not to stand up for himself, which leads to him being cruelly bullied by his classmates. Unfortunately, the situation at home isn't much better; his father is an abusive alcoholic, presumably due to his wife's suicide, and frequently takes out his anger by beating his two sons. Finn lives in fear both at home and at school, never standing up for himself or having the confidence to confront his adversaries. He admires people like his sister Gwen, who helps him defend himself against bullies, and his friend and classmate Robin, who shows bravery in playground fights.

One day, while walking home from school, Finn was kidnapped. His kidnapper was the infamous Kidnapper, a local serial killer who had been stalking the area and was responsible for the disappearances of his friend Robin and his acquaintance Bruce Yamada. Locked in his soundproofed basement, Finn used a phone to communicate with the Kidnapper's victims, who insisted on making sure he escaped alive. They helped him by giving him tips on what to do during his time in the basement, such as cutting a hole in the wall that led to a freezer, using a cable as a weapon, digging a hole, and picking the padlock on the back door of the house. Meanwhile, Gwen searched for him, guided by her prophetic dreams.

After attempting to escape once and being caught, the Grabber prepares to kill Finn. Using the items he received from the other children and motivated by a powerful pep talk from Robin, Finn easily defeats the Grabber, hooking him down the hole and hitting him with the phone, before finally strangling him with the cord.

Finn escapes to the neighborhood, where he encounters Gwen and the police. The officers find the killer's body, along with those of the other five deceased children, buried across the street.

Three years later, in 1981, Finney is now a popular and well-known young man, having defeated the Raptor and leading a seemingly normal life. He is an intelligent, sensitive, and somewhat insecure teenager, scarred by the adversity of his past. He lives in constant fear but is willing to face whatever it takes to protect his loved ones and overcome his past.

After surviving the Raptor, Finney changed completely, becoming hardened and colder. He smokes weed constantly and gets into fights all the time. His younger sister, Gwen, and his best friend, Ernesto, are his only friends and the people he cares about most. He doesn't like to talk about what happened three years ago at all, becoming even more cold and serious.
