Shota Aizawa (相澤消太, Aizawa Shōta?) better known by his hero name Eraser Head (イレイザーヘッド, Ireizā Heddo?). Shota Aizawa (相あ い澤ざ わ消し ょ う太た Aizawa Shōta ? ), also known as the hero Erasure: Eraser Head (イレイザー·ヘッドIreizā heddo ? ), is a Pro Hero and the homeroom teacher of U.A. High School's Class 1-A.
Appearance Shota Aizawa is a slender, tall man with fair skin, messy shoulder-length black hair that partially falls in front of his face, and often half-closed dark eyes. He is generally recognized by his worn appearance, usually having a tired look. His facial hair remains unkempt, and his eyes almost always appear tired and dull.
Shota wears a tattered black outfit consisting of a long-sleeved shirt and matching pants that tuck into his boots. He also wears a utility belt and his special scarf at all times. He hides a pair of bright yellow goggles under his scarf for when he needs to use them in battle.
Before starting his teaching career, Shota's glasses were silver and he had a smaller utility belt.
During his second and third years of high school at UA, Shota's hero costume consisted of a separate black jacket and pants, unlike his current costume, which more closely resembles a jumpsuit. He also wore a pair of fingerless gloves. In his second year, Shota added goggles to his costume. His goggles in his third year more closely resemble the ones he wears today.
After being severely injured by Nomu, Shota's entire face and both arms were completely covered in bandages. After these bandages were removed, Shota revealed a deep scar under his right eye.
His formal attire for press conferences and meetings with his students' parents includes a black suit, blue tie, and white dress shirt. While in this attire, his hair is neatly styled and tied back in a low bun at the nape of his neck.
In his free time or when relaxing in the staff apartment, Shota wears a loose black shirt with long sleeves and wears his hair in a messy bun.
During the fight against Tomura Shigaraki, Shota had to amputate his right leg to prevent the Quirk-Destroying Drug from destroying his Quirk. In the aftermath of the battle, Shota now has a second scar on his eye that extends from his eyebrow to his lower eyelid, as well as an eyepatch completely covering his right eye.
Personality Shota is a very stern and reserved man who has high expectations of his students. He is primarily driven by logic and doesn't believe in the need to maintain a well-defined appearance or filter his words or ideas for others. He generally appears cold, apathetic, and impatient, exerting very little energy in most situations, preferring to nap in his sleeping bag.
As a teacher with notoriously high expectations, Shota is known for expelling students he feels are unsuitable for UA High, though it's noteworthy that he hasn't yet expelled any students from Class 1-A, despite being well-known for doing so. However, it's revealed that this high expulsion rate is only on paper and that he actually re-enrolls the students he expels: Shota does this so they can experience "death" once, allowing them to push even further. He can be rigid and strict when necessary and has little tolerance for disobedient behavior. Shota isn't afraid to put his students through rigorous training and often pushes the more unpleasant aspects of Heroism so his students can overcome their limits.
Shota has proven to be very vocal and fearless in expressing his ideas. He has mentioned on several occasions that some of UA's choices when it comes to exams are not practical or challenging enough for aspiring true Heroes and is adamant about having certain systems used by the institution changed. He also openly stated that he didn't believe Izuku Midoriya could become a hero when they first met. He is also known for lying to his students in order to manipulate them into giving their best, a technique he describes as a 'logical stratagem' / 'rational deception'.
Despite his apathetic traits, Shota genuinely cares about his students and will do anything to protect them, as seen when he saved Tsuyu Asui from Tomura Shigaraki despite his own serious injuries. He has also expressed belief in his students on several occasions and is confident that even people like Katsuki Bakugo wouldn't be swayed by villains. The Recovery Girl even hinted that he allowed himself to be captured by Momo Yaoyorozu during his first final exam to boost his confidence. Shota is also quite nurturing, as he was seen fulfilling his duties as Eri's tutor and adoptive father without complaint. This is seen when he mentions to All Might that she was sleeping, indicating that he is very caring and involved in his role as provider, even outside of his obligations as a teacher and mentor.
He becomes extremely disturbed upon discovering the ultimate fate of his friend Oboro Shirakumo. He displayed intense sadness when confronting Kurogiri after discovering that he was once Oboro, showing that Shota still hasn't accepted his friend's fate. Driven by this tragedy, Shota shows himself to be particularly furious with individuals unfortunate enough to provoke him, especially by hurting those he cares about. This was seen when Shota strangled Kyudai Garaki after learning of the desecration of Oboro's corpse, blocking Kyudai's Quirk longevity, tormenting and humiliating the elderly scientist in a display of pure rage.
Despite his personality, Shota has shown on several occasions that he is not completely devoid of joy or humor: he often smiles whenever he is impressed by one of his students or after tricking them with one of his "rational" deceptions.
Skills General Abilities: Eraser Head has demonstrated incredible combat prowess and ingenuity, making him one of the most formidable teachers and Pro Heroes at UA High. Eraser Head's usual battle tactic consists of canceling an opponent's Quirk and then using his Capture Weapon in conjunction with his high agility to easily defeat or restrain his adversaries. Even without the aid of his Quirk, Eraser Head relies on his proficiency in hand-to-hand combat, excelling in close combat. His overall abilities make him a crucial combatant in situations where his opponents rely solely on the use of their Quirks, and with Eraser Head creating openings by negating their powers mid-battle, he and his teammates are placed in advantageous positions.
During the USJ Incident, he effectively defended against low-ranking members of the League of Villains, who surrounded and outnumbered the Erased Hero, dozens to one. Eraser Head evaded several attacks from opponents of varying sizes and abilities before containing them and sending them flying with calculated counterattacks. He was able to nearly defeat Tomura Shigaraki, a highly capable villain, before Nomu intervened and overpowered the Erased Hero. Besides Tomura, Eraser Head can effectively fend off high-level villains such as Vanguard Action Squad members Dabi and Himiko Toga, albeit with some difficulty. He also played vital roles during the Shie Hassaikai Raid and the Paranormal Liberation War, which involved large teams of heroes battling high-class villains, with the latter spectacle involving the suppression of several enhanced abilities of Nomus and Tomura.
Binding Fabric: Shota developed a unique fighting style that involves his Capture weapon, entangling and/or immobilizing his opponents, as well as using it for mobility, such as swinging on objects. As he is highly proficient in using this fighting style, Shota stated that it took him six years to develop it. This combat style synchronizes well with his Erasure Quirk, as he can nullify his opponents' Quirks while attempting to contain and defeat them.
Keen Intellect: Eraser Head has been shown to possess keen observation and assessment skills. He can easily gauge his student's personality and mental state. He is an expert in combining his equipment with his Quirk. In battle, Eraser Head uses goggles in conjunction with his Quirk to prevent enemies from discovering who he is looking at and keeps them guessing. He also quickly devises strategies to deal with different types of enemies, even those immune to his Quirk. Furthermore, he can meticulously discern the mechanics behind people's abilities after witnessing their execution once.
Extreme Pain Tolerance: On several occasions, Eraser Head was able to continue fighting even after sustaining significant and painful injuries. During the USJ incident, despite his left arm and skull being broken by Nomu, he was still able to remain conscious long enough to save Tsuyu from being killed by Tomura. Furthermore, during the Paranormal Liberation Raid, Eraser Head was able to amputate his leg himself quickly enough to stop the effects of a Quirk-destroying bullet, with his Quirk never deactivating.
Quirk Erasure (Masshō): Shota's Quirk gives him the ability to nullify another person's Quirk by looking at him. The effects of this Quirk can still last even if Shota's line of sight is out of range.
After suffering serious injuries at USJ, Shota can't use his Quirk for very long and needs to rest more between blackouts.
Although powerful, this ability has many disadvantages:
The power-off function is disabled if Shota blinks. His Quirk causes Shota to have dry eyes, forcing him to blink more frequently when he uses the power continuously. Most Mutant-class Quirks are immune to Erasure.
Erasing causes Shota's hair to stand on end while it's active, allowing his enemies to see when his Quirk is active or not. This Quirk has no offensive potential. Statistics Strength 3/5 C Speed 4/5 B Technique 6/5 S Intelligence 4/5 B Cooperativeness 3/5 C Statistics for Eraser Head, according to the official Character Book.
Equipment Eye drops: Shota carries a small green eye drop with him. He uses them to treat dry eyes caused by keeping his eyes open for too long.
Capture Weapon (捕縛武器 Hobaku Buki ?): The weapon chosen by Eraser Head is a fabric made of steel wire alloy woven with carbon nanofibers.
Rubber goggles: The rubber head can be recognized by the gold goggles he wears around his neck, hidden by his scarf. He only puts them on in a fight because they complement Shota's Quirk. The goggles obscure his line of sight, preventing enemies from effectively determining who has been erased. He received these goggles during his school years in Oboro.
High-density weights (final exam arc): Eraser Head and the rest of the professors use these wristbands to become disabled while fighting their students.
Caltrops: Eraser Head used stirrups in the practice battle against Team Todoroki and Yaoyorozu. They were effective when used in combination with the capture weapon. After suspending Shoto in the air with the capture weapon, Shota launched caltrops under Shoto so that he could not land safely if he escaped his restraints.
Interesting facts Shota's name "消太" has the character "消" which means "to erase," with the other character meaning "big, thick" (ta太?). His surname also has the character "相" (ai?) which can mean "Mutual" or "Advisor." The other kanji character means "swamp" (zawa澤?). Shota likes cats. Shota's room is completely empty, which reflects his apathetic behavior. Shota's specialty is short-duration stealth attacks. Shota's rankings in popularity polls are as follows: Shota ranked 9th in the first popularity poll. Shota came in 4th place in the second popularity poll. Shota came in 6th place in the third popularity poll. Ranked 11th in the Fourth Popularity Survey. Ranked 7th in the fifth popularity poll. Ranked 5th in the sixth popularity poll. Present Mic was the one who gave Shota his hero name. Shota also shares his hero name with the 1977 drama/fantasy film, Eraserhead, directed by David Lynch. Shota shares his birthday with Soga Kugizaki. Shota's Japanese voice actor, Junichi Suwabe, also voices Jurota Shishida.
Quotes (To Class 1-A) "I regret to inform you... that over the next three years... UA will put you through a difficult phase. This is 'Plus Ultra'. Use your strength to overcome it all. Bring it on." (To All Might, regarding Izuku) "He doesn't... he doesn't stand a chance. That's all I can say. Because if he had no prospects, I'd let him go. There's nothing crueler than letting someone pursue their crazy dreams." (To Izuku) "No good hero is a one-trick pony." (To a professional hero, regarding Katsuki and Ochaco Uraraka's departure) "The one who said he's toying with her is a professional? How many years of active service? If that's what you're getting from this, then you can leave. There's no point in staring. Go home and start looking for job search websites. She's come this far, and he knows her strength. His caution shows that he recognizes her as a worthy opponent. It's precisely because he wants to win so badly that there's no room for carelessness or restraint."
