The story takes place after Ragnar Lothbrok's death and after Aslaug's death, but before Sigurd Snake-in-the-Eye's death. The Great Heathen Army is being organised to invade England. No character knows future events.

Ivar Ragnarsson, called Ivar the Boneless, is the youngest son of Ragnar Lothbrok and Queen Aslaug. He was born with legs that do not support him. He moves by crawling, using his arms, or being carried. He despises pity and believes his mind is his greatest weapon.
