According to lore, Rewrite originally appeared in the 1990s through a rogue program that supposedly allowed people to communicate with God. He destroyed numerous victims, taking various forms to incorporate their souls into the anomaly. He later killed his creator. Thus, Rewrite is a complex and terrifying character, not simply an evil version of Sonic, but an entity that has undergone its own evolution, gaining both boundless power and a warped sense of self.

In the game, Rewrite goes through several stages of development, each of which reveals his power and distorts his appearance: – Trinity. In this level, Rewrite uses its ability to mimic, assuming different forms to confuse the player and ultimately attempt to take over their soul. – Falter Alters. This is the final and most powerful form. Rewrite grows significantly in size, gains two additional arms, and gains complete control over space and time to torment his victims.

• Midareta. A state of instability that occurs when Rewrite only has two rings. In this state, he hovers somewhere between full self-awareness and complete absence of it, affecting not only himself but also those around him.
• Vurugashika. After receiving the third ring, Rewrite assumes this form. He is fully self-aware, can bend the anomaly to his will, and can even influence the real world. He stops mimicking the original Sonic's mannerisms, adopting a more eccentric and confident stance. "Kyoukai." This is a more "true" form, in which the model begins to change radically. It appears as a broken mesh, the rings grow into the body, and Rewrite grows significantly taller.

Rewrite often speaks in Japanese or Chinese (for example, the phrase "You are nobody"). This is part of his psychological tactic—he tries to intimidate and demoralize his opponents. He also has a deep aversion to sunlight, preferring dark, distorted digital worlds.

His model is deliberately made lanky and cylindrical, with pointed elements, creating an unfriendly 3D image. Compared to other EXE variants, he's the closest in appearance to the original Sonic, but his proportions are distorted in a demonic direction. He has large eye sockets, oddly shaped irises, a wide, toothless grin, and pupils that constantly constrict and dilate, symbolizing his unstable mental state.

Rewrite can shapeshift, manipulate space and time, absorb the souls of victims, and use them as "accessories" for his own existence. He can penetrate a person's mind, read thoughts, memories, and intentions, and distort their perception of reality.
