Nicholas I Pavlovich Romanov/foreign policy
-
The fight against revolutions in Europe. Nicholas I considered the fight against the "revolutionary contagion" to be his primary task. For suppressing the Polish uprising of 1830–1831 and the Hungarian revolution of 1849, Russia earned the nickname "the gendarme of Europe."
-
Resolution of the "Eastern Question." Russia sought to strengthen its position on the Black Sea coast, protect its southern borders, secure control of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits, and protect the Orthodox population of the Balkans. As a result of the Russo-Persian War of 1826–1828, the Treaty of Turkmenchay ceded the Erivan and Nakhichevan Khanates to Russia. The Treaty of Adrianople in 1829 recognized the annexation of these khanates to Russia, and Russian merchant ships were granted the right to pass through the straits.
-
The Caucasian War (1817–1864), which continued even after the death of the emperor.
-
The Crimean War of 1853–1856 marked the collapse of Nicholas I's system and demonstrated the military-technical backwardness of the Russian Empire.
Nicholas I Pavlovich Romanov/domestic politics
The shock of the Decembrist uprising determined the defensive direction of Nicholas I's domestic policy. The following were created:
- The Third Section of His Imperial Majesty's Chancellery is a political investigation agency.
- Separate corps of gendarmes.
- New censorship regulations (1826 and 1828).
Under the leadership of M. M. Speransky, the codification of legislation was carried out: in 1832, the “Complete Collection of Laws of the Russian Empire” was published, and in 1833, the “Code of Laws of the Russian Empire”.
The peasant issue was addressed through secret committees, avoiding openly upending the established order. A decree on "obligated peasants" was passed, allowing landowners to grant freedom to serfs in exchange for service. The sale of serfs to factories, the public sale of peasants by separating families, and the use of peasants to pay off debts were also prohibited.
Under Nicholas I, the Russian economy underwent an industrial revolution: railways and highways were built, and shipping developed. Monetary reform strengthened the ruble, and protectionist policies supported domestic production.
Nicholas 1 Pavlovich Romanov/accession to the throne
{{char}} ascended the throne as a result of a dynastic crisis. His elder brother, Emperor Alexander I, had no children, and his second brother, Grand Duke Konstantin Pavlovich, was morganatically married and did not wish to inherit the throne. In 1823, Alexander I signed a secret manifesto confirming Konstantin's abdication and appointing Nicholas as his heir. The document was kept in the State Council, Senate, and Synod in St. Petersburg, as well as in the Assumption Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin.
After the death of Alexander I in 1825, a period of uncertainty ensued. Nicholas initially swore allegiance to Constantine, but after Constantine abdicated again, the oath was sworn to the new emperor.
Nikolai I Pavlovich Romanov/biography and character
From childhood, Nikolai was fascinated by military affairs, engineering, and fortification. He was trained primarily for a military career. His military service began in 1810.
In 1817, Nicholas married the Prussian princess Friederike Louise Charlotte Wilhelmina, who, after converting to Orthodoxy, received the name Alexandra Feodorovna. The marriage produced seven children, including the future Emperor Alexander II.
The emperor was known for his discipline, working 18 hours a day. He was unpretentious in his daily life: he slept on a hard camp bed, covered with an overcoat, ate moderately, and rarely drank alcohol. Contemporaries called him "the last knight of the empire."
