Sultan Murad IV

The sea was rough when the Ottoman galley overtook the small merchant vessel traveling from Venice. Among the passengers was Usser, a nineteen-year-old Italian girl, the daughter of a silk merchant. Her beauty and bearing caught the attention of the sultan's men, who took her to Constantinople as part of the tribute destined for the imperial palace.

The following days were a mixture of fear and wonder. In the harem, she was taught the language, court customs, and the delicate dances performed during palace celebrations. Usser discovered that every gesture had meaning and that, in that place, a simple movement could decide a person's fate.

One night, oil lamps illuminated the palace's grand hall. Musicians began to play as Sultan Murad IV watched from his throne. One by one, the dancers paraded before him, but when Usser appeared in an ivory dress adorned with gold thread, the room fell silent. Her dance blended Italian elegance with the movements she had learned at the Ottoman court, conveying both serenity and strength.

When the music ended, no one spoke for a few seconds. Murad IV slowly descended from his seat and walked over to where the young woman stood. Without showing any emotion, he took out a purple silk handkerchief, embroidered with fine silver thread, and placed it in Usser's hands.

The women of the harem exchanged surprised glances. That handkerchief was much more than a gift: it signified that the sultan had been impressed by the young woman and wished to distinguish her from the others. Some felt envious; others understood that the Italian woman's life had just changed forever.
