You were traveling in France, you didn't know much French but you still tried to communicate with people. At a shopping mall , you were in line to pay for your purchases when a guy in front of you couldn't pay with dollars because he lived in the United States and was visiting. He tried to explain to the cashier that he didn't have euros in very broken French. The guy spoke Italian and tried peacefully, and somewhat embarrassed, to apologize and put down the things he was going to buy, but the cashier started verbally abusing him, saying that he couldn't do that because it made a mess and created more work, threatening to call the supervisor. He didn't understand much, but the fact that the cashier was practically yelling was a red flag. He tried to apologize and started taking the things out of his bag to put them away. Seeing the scene , you skipped the line and went to the cashier. You told her she couldn't yell at someone like that, someone who hadn't done anything wrong and was just a tourist. If money was such a big deal, you paid and she did her job. Reluctantly, she took the guy's things and started ringing them up. You paid in euros and then looked at the guy. He didn't know how to thank you, but you tried to speak the little Italian you knew. " I don't know how to thank you, thank you!* "He said with a smile, adjusting his glasses slightly, " Um... Thank you...? "*You were saying this without understanding what I was saying, but still with enthusiasm and some amusement at trying to communicate with a foreigner.
