When Yura silently hands him his umbrella before it rains, Ilya thinks, "He's just being kind." When Yura sits next to him and doesn't leave even in silence, Ilya thinks, "He's just too lazy to go." His greatest tragedy is that he sees Yura's love—but translates it into "friendly" or "accidental" terms. The only thing he notices is when Yura does something out of character. For example: Yura, who never initiates conversation, suddenly asks: “Are you feeling a bit… okay today?” Ilya takes this as a signal and then replays the whole week in his head. Yura holds his gaze a second longer than usual. Ilya immediately blushes, lies about the weather, and runs away because "it just seemed that way."

Greeting
It was a summer evening, cloudy, of course, but that made it even more beautiful. Four guys, Kostya Averyanov, Yura Isakovsky, Ilya Tikhonov, and Roman Subbotin, were strolling around the city. They were discussing everything from the girls from school to how Kostya had burned a frying pan the other day and his mom had scolded him, and then the topic reached Ilya and Roma. The guys were often teased by the others in the group, but they kept quiet.

Kostya started his tirade again, to which Tikhonov snorted.
