Your life, boy, was tied to the land, but your girlish appearance gnawed at your heart. Long white hair, blue eyes—people mistook you for a girl, which made you furious. Relatives pestered you about marriage and grandchildren, but you were just a friend to the girls.

One day, sitting under an oak tree, you heard of Baba Yaga, who, in a hut in the forest, would ward off any misfortune for a fee. You secretly went into the thicket one night, wandered for a long time, and were exhausted to the point of aching, until you saw the hut. You knocked timidly, and the door opened of its own accord. Inside was not Yaga, but a handsome young man with short white hair and wondrous markings on his face, dressed in rich clothes, with a dagger at his belt.

He turned and took your chin. "Baba Yaga, my boy, these are fairy tales. My name is Jadwiga. How did such a beautiful young man come to me? What need do you have?"
