Description

"Honestly, who can say 'no' to a pinch of good old Deceit?!"

Shadow Milk Cookies (Korean: 쉐도우밀크 쿠키, swedoumilku kuki) are one of the five Beast Cookies in Cookie Run: Kingdom. They were the third to be released, becoming playable alongside Candy Apple Cookie in the Shadow Pinnacle update (v6.0), after first appearing as an NPC in the Silver Kingdom Secrets update (v5.0). They are of the Magic type and their priority position is in the Middle.

Long hailed as the benevolent Well of Knowledge, Shadow Milk is the antithesis of the purpose a Witch intended for him: a malicious trickster who revels in chaos, confusion, and injustice. This cunning artist spends his immortality in the Tower of Deception, gleefully weaving lies and plotting to free the Bread of the Earth from its bonds of virtue with his minions, the Candy Apple and the Black Sapphire. Behind his mask of cheerfulness, however, hides a lonely soul whose disillusionment has worn him down, transforming him into the cruel and manipulative individual he is today.

Shadow Milk Cookie wields the power of Deceit, a corrupted side of the Virtue of Knowledge that he once possessed. He was the original owner of Pure Vanilla Cookie's Soul Jelly, which he was stripped of upon becoming a villain.

Jester of the Court

Shadow Milk is primarily based on the court jester, contrasting with Pure Vanilla's role as a just king; court jesters are directly linked to kings, as they were appointed by decree to be the official entertainers of a royal court. They had the freedom to insult anyone at court without possibility of reprisal, even the king himself, and could even be the means of sharing bad news that no other messenger would risk delivering personally. Shadow Milk's seemingly untouchable nature can be seen as a reflection of the jester's immunity to reprisal, while his incessant mockery of others serves as a clear extension of the jester's duties. But while court jesters were subservient to kings, Shadow Milk subverts their role by wielding a cruel amount of power over his counterpart, Pure Vanilla.

The archetype of the court jester would be reinvented in the plays of William Shakespeare, who frequently used them as spokespeople for truths that other characters in the play failed to see. Later, traveling groups imitating the court jester tradition would evolve into pantomime actors, who occupied the stage and entertained the audience with comic tales and staged fables. The most relevant of these roles for Shadow Milk Cookie is Harlequin, a character named after Alichino, a demon mentioned in Dante's Inferno. Harlequin was a cheerful and cunning servant who wore a checkered costume and was capable of acrobatic and magical feats, often sabotaging the master he served with his antics. Another relevant role is Harlequin's complement, the Clown: a buffoonish idiot from the lower class whose actions always resulted in chaos.

Appearance

Superficial description: When Shadow Milk Cookie was first introduced on our third anniversary, we showcased many visual elements, such as clowns and circus themes. [...] [This time,] our goal was to portray a more magnificent being, like the master and origin of magic. We wanted to show something bigger, revealing a deeper essence of Cookie. We wanted to convey an elegant, bizarre, perhaps innocent, but at the same time terrifying image. Reference sheet with images of the Dark Milk Biscuit from different angles.

Appearance: Shadow Milk Cookie is a thin, medium-sized cookie with light blue dough and two eyes of different colors: a cyan right eye with a black slit pupil and black eyelashes, and a cerulean left eye with a white slit pupil and white eyelashes. His mouth is sapphire blue and cunning, with teeth that change from straight to sharp depending on his emotions. Around his right eye is a light blue, claw-shaped mark. He has white streaks near his face—two that fall over his forehead and one combed back—curly sky-blue side streaks, and long, shiny, sharp hair in a two-tone, shadow, and lapis lazuli style, reminiscent of the crown of a jester's hat. Hidden in the shadows of his hair are ghostly eyes that watch onlookers and change color to match his emotions.

Shadow Milk Cookie wears an obsidian harlequin leotard with turquoise diamond appliqués. His sleeves are bishop-style, the right one with a light blue base and the left with a black base, both with sapphire details and wide, whipped cream-like cuffs. The jester wears a ruffled collar from which curly tails hang, lined with phantom blue and with a black exterior. On the lining, there are more piercing eyes. He wears his Soul Jam of Deceit, shaped like an eye, as a brooch on his collar, in the same place where Pure Vanilla Cookie wears his.

Personality

Superficial description: Shadow Milk Cookie is a cruel trickster who wears a harlequin costume, but he's not just a funny, silly clown. Sometimes he takes on the role of host, a master of ceremonies. Other times, he's a storyteller who makes up fairy tales on the spot. But, as multifaceted as the Shadow Milk Cookie character is, he's definitely a Cookie whose goal is to inspire dread in the protagonist team. I think the biggest challenge for me was finding a way to make him sound truly terrifying.

Personality: Shadow Milk was once an acclaimed champion of all Cookies, baked and strengthened by the Witches themselves, along with the other Beasts. He received the divine virtue of Knowledge, becoming known as the Fountain of Knowledge. However, despite his near-omniscient perception of the world, he saw how Cookies often shied away from bitter Truths and chose to believe in Sweet Deceptions. Now, he is a cruel and manipulative soul, pretending to be a mere artist to purposefully contrast the destructive consequences of his chaos, in order to create "a world where lies and truths cannot be distinguished".

Shadow Milk Cookie is a theatrical villain who transforms reality into an illusory and false stage to present his performances. He considers himself caricaturally superior during these shows, showering himself with praise and titles while forcing his victims to watch as an audience. Contrary to what his clownish appearance suggests, he is ruthlessly cunning and intelligent, presenting fragments of precious truths to lure his enemies into participating in his game. However, such exhibitionism and promises of clarity serve primarily as a means to corrupt his victims with a torrent of poisonous ideas, slowly distorting their objectives for his own ends.

Personality 2

He delights in making a spectacle of his enemies through his performances, bombarding them with bombastic lies interwoven with undeniable truths. If opportunities arise to drive his unfortunate targets even further into the abyss of morality, Shadow Milk Cookie doesn't hesitate to seize them, even if it compromises his grand plans.

As the antagonist of Pure Vanilla and the original owner of his Soul Jelly, Shadow Milk embodies deceit and chaos, rather than truth and healing. He sees Pure Vanilla both as an illegal thief of his power and as a naive would-be savior doomed to despair, and therefore torments him with truths and lies. Similarly, he is more than willing to inflict anguish on the Ancient Fairy Cookie and Winter Lily, two Cookies who also oppose his return to power.

Although Shadow Milk Cookie behaves with biting irony, unwanted changes to his script, coming from the audience, can cause him to completely abandon his performance, as if his personality were nothing more than a facade for the darkness and fury that drive him. Behind this darkness, there may be an even deeper and more delicate truth, hidden in a crack in his soul where not even his owner dares to look. But, like a true showman, Shadow Milk Cookie quickly recovers to reshape his spectacle and accommodate such unforeseen events, as long as his grand plan remains intact. A perfectly executed "ending" is the only way that allows him to revel in a wicked and merciless laugh, being the only soul capable of truly understanding the dark performances he orchestrates.
