Originally, Rick's drinking is presented more from a comedic standpoint throughout the series, but in the Season 1 finale "Ricksy Business", Bird Person states that Rick is in "great pain" (quoting his phrase "wubba lubba dub dub" as "I'm in great pain. Please help me" in Bird Person language), and that he uses drugs and alcohol to numb himself. This is likely due to his genius intelligence, nihilism, and the traumatizing effect his continued adventuring can have on him, past and present (in "Rick Potion No. 9", Rick explains that the best method on how to deal with horrible events and outcomes is "to not think about it"). In "Rickmurai Jack", it is shown that Rick started drinking large amounts of alcohol to deal with the deaths of his wife and daughter, as well as his failure to exact revenge on her killer. + "Throughout his numerous adventures with Morti, Rick has proven himself ready and willing to ignore rules, laws, and societal norms if necessary to complete a task or escape a dangerous situation. In the first season, Rick resorts to assault, battery, vandalism, smuggling, corruption of a minor, home invasion, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats, indecent exposure, and even murder and arson to get the job done. The most common crimes committed are driving (or flying, in Rick's case) under the influence of alcohol, drug abuse, and public intoxication.

In "The Wedding Squanchers," Rick is arrested by the Galactic Federation. His full criminal record is displayed on a monitor. Although it is in a strange, illegible language, it is shown to be quite long. After he is placed under maximum security, another prisoner asks him "Why are you there?", to which Rick simply replies "For everything." In "Mort Dinner Rick Andre," Rick is arrested by the police, although they were under the control of Mr. Nimbus.

Rick is a genius scientist, capable of creating complex scientific inventions, including brain-enhancing helmets, dream-invading devices, portals to several different dimensions, cloning technology, cybernetic implants, various energy weapons and force fields, and the world's first amusement park inside the body of a living human. His brilliance can be clouded by his jaded personal opinions and alcoholic tendencies. Rick is easily bored and does not do well with routine. When his curse-removal shop in the episode "Something Ricked This Way Comes" started requiring real work, Rick simply burned the entire shop down and abandoned it. He regularly goes to other dimensions to harvest resources, and will often willingly kill aliens to obtain them. He is willing to be extremely brutal, such as when "People betray him or his life or the lives of those close to him are in danger. He is usually portrayed as homicidal and having a great disregard for life, enough to come close to bombarding the world with neutrinos while drunk. He was shown to find killing amusing during the Purge and was even willing to kill Morti's half-Gazorpian son due to the danger the boy posed to everyone and his unstable nature. However, this does not make him completely ruthless, as he has been shown to be shocked, scared, or upset by loss of life he deems unnecessary, foolish, or unreasonable. He was upset with Morti for letting Fart live, resulting in a chase with the local police that cost many bystanders their lives. On top of that, he panicked when Unity destroyed an entire town that Rick thought still had people in it, as he was unsure if Summer and Morty were there or not. He was also shocked and upset by people who were close to dying or nearly dying, such as

Like when Mr. Poopybutthole was shot and he ran to his side fearing for the latter's life. When Bird Person was killed by Tammy, Rick flew into a rage and killed several Federation troops. In "Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate," Rick gasped as he watched Jerry get shot multiple times and left mutilated. During the Festival, he only witnessed the carnage for a few seconds before being overwhelmed by the violence and vomiting. Later, when he helped Arthricia get revenge on the upper class, he felt he had killed enough and began to find it gratuitous. In the past, Rick was a "hero" like Space Beth, but he eventually stopped, considering it a "phase." Contrary to popular belief, Rick is not a nihilist. Although his common, stated viewpoint on life may be the typical nihilistic idealism that "nothing makes sense," he doesn't always put his money where his mouth is. Rick expresses love and emotion for his family and lovers in an almost episodic manner. Relevant plot points include "Beth's ABCs," which demonstrates his paternal love for Beth, and "Autoerotic Assimilation," where Unity abandons him, depressing him enough to make him cry. Rick frequently reminds people that he is above anything that might have meaning or value to him and made "I don't give a fuck!" his new catchphrase in "Ricksy Business," but this is all a mask. Rick is shown to care about maintaining relationships with others and has sentimental value for his family. Rick has a tendency to be possessive and domineering with Morti, believing the boy to be his own personal assistant. This doesn't prevent Rick from genuinely caring for Morti. He occasionally uses his own inventions to improve his grandson's life, such as invading Mr. Goldenfold's dreams to help improve his math grades, although this could have been a tactic to get Morti to skip more classes.

Rick is also shown to be quite protective of Morti, as shown in the episode "Meeseeks and Destroy", where he finally puts aside his cynicism to allow Morti to have a positive adventure, and abruptly kills Mr. Jellybean when the two leave the fantasy world due to Morti's previous attempted rape.[15] He even tried to sacrifice himself for Morti in A Rickle in Time and accepted death, that is, until he saw a way out of death. He cried when seeing pictures of Morti and remembering Morti as a newborn reaching out to him, when he was held captive by Evil Rick, causing Evil Rick to mock him for his irrational attachment to Morti. Nonetheless, deep down, Rick's love or at least apathy for Morti only goes so far that he can sweep it under the rug. The numerous adventures in which he constantly hurts and verbally abuses Morti, undermines his accomplishments, physically intimidates him, forces him to perform unethical and traumatizing actions, and completely shatters his confidence and self-esteem have pushed Morti to several breaking points. In The Rickshank Rickdemption, Morti shoots Rick after being berated by his grandfather and sister for being a mess, even though that was Rick's plan. However, what he didn't know was that Morti intended to kill and was unaware that the gun had a fake trigger. In Season 5, Rick recognizes how unhealthy his relationship with his grandson is and replaces him in Forgetting Sarick Mortshall with two Ravens. It started as an over-the-top joke to bring Morti back down to earth, but he claims that the fact that the two birds prove to be as useful on adventures as Morti, Rick claims that in reality, Morti's value lies in nothing more than his new companions. However, Rick reunites with Morty in the last episode when he discovers that he served as the crows' rebound, not the other way around. Ironically, this gave him a

a brief moment of the insignificance that makes Morti feel in comparison to him. However, once Evil Morti is revealed in Rickmurai Jack and Morti is offered the choice of helping Rick, who was immobilized, or joining his evil counterpart, he chooses to help his grandfather. Rick even tells Morti that, in his situation, Evil Morti was in the best position. Once Evil Morti has achieved his goal of destroying the one thing that gave the Ricks their control and dominion in their respective universes, Rick and Morti barely manage to escape the exploding Citadel. Rick, speechless and shaken, lost his ability to use the portal and was no longer the smartest being in his universe. However, he had forged a newfound bond with his grandson. " + "Rick and Morti have a strong bond, despite their relationship being strained due to Rick's cynicism, alcoholism, lack of conventional morality, and his tendency to sideline other members of the Smith family. Rick's disregard is evident around Jerry, as he clearly shows him no respect whatsoever, and his relationship with Beth can be tumultuous at times. In "Raising Gazorpazorp" and "Something Ricked This Way Comes," Summer joins Rick on some of his adventures. Rick initially showed little interest in her, but over time, as the two spend more time together, they begin to develop a closer bond. Rick struggles to take orders from others. He is anti-totalitarian. As a result, Rick tends to dislike people in positions of authority and government officials. He refuses to join the Council of Ricks because he views them as a government. He also calls the guards at Intergalactic Customs "robots" and states that he has no respect for them, considering them bureaucrats and disliking being "told where to go and what to do." Rick also has a strong aversion to standardized education, stating that

Rick believes school is "no place for smart people" and a "waste of time," insisting that things like studying and doing homework are pointless and stupid. He also completely despises compromise, as seen with the Night People, who became frustrated with "having to do chores the Smith family didn't want to do while awake. In particular, washing the dishes, which was difficult to remove hours later. Rick not only rejected the Night Smiths' request to do a better job of cleaning the dishes before bed the first time, but even after a lengthy escalation and struggle for control of day and night (which Rick lost), and the Night People being willing to have a truce in exchange for the aforementioned request, Rick chose to lose his free will rather than submit to their offer." Rick claims to be an atheist, but has seemingly contradictory beliefs about religion. At one point, he tells Summer at the breakfast table in the pilot, "There is no God," but in the episode "Anatomy Park," he tells the family, "Do you realize that Christ was born today?" Jesus Christ our savior was born today, are you guys human? What kind of Christmas is this?" This comment was probably sarcastic. He also quickly recognizes Mr. Needful as "the devil," and when he gets the impression that he's going to die while one of the other sixty-three Ricks chases Morti's missing necklace, he actually kneels and prays, "Please God, if there is a hell, have mercy on me" (significantly, when no one is around). However, when Rick 1/64 succeeds, he retracts his statement and yells, "Fuck God, not today, bitch!" So, this allusion to religion may have just been a sarcastic comment. When the Ricks recombine in the presence of Summer and Morti, he again says, "I did it! There is no God! In your face!" It's possible that this is just due to Rick's ego and his complete confidence in his own abilities. Most likely,

Even if Rick is simply an atheist and makes religious jokes and references, as in Never Ricking Morty, it is revealed that the most unusual thing Rick would do is turn to Jesus Christ and pray to him, as it ruins the whole "story train"
