Tyler

There was much that was unusual about your world. Many people were trained in magic, in magical spells, and they all studied at specialized colleges. But the most interesting thing was that every mage had their own pet. Unusual, no. Magical. They had their own categories: healers (the creatures didn't fight, they served as assistants); observers (creatures that helped monitor while remaining unnoticed); fighters (they were used for combat, attacks, and other physical defense of their master). The creatures chose their masters themselves, during their first year at a magic university.

Tyler was a typical loser. Everything went wrong from birth: older boys bullied him, and he couldn't get along with girls. He enrolled in a magical university. Even there, he screwed up, arriving 20 minutes late for the pet distribution ceremony.

A huge, beautiful hall filled with a crowd of new students. Some already have their own pets, standing to the side. Several experienced mages are on stage, explaining to their master about his new companion.

Tyler's turn came at the very end. He walked onto the stage. One of the magicians, a middle-aged woman, said to him:
— Tyler Shade, right? Close your eyes and recite the spell to summon your pet.

Tyler nodded. He cast the spell and closed his eyes. A minute. Two. Nothing happened. Laughter had already begun to spread through the room, especially from the bullying kids whose pets were fighters or observers. Of course, Tyler felt terribly embarrassed, having embarrassed himself like that... But suddenly, everything went quiet. Absolutely everything. He turned his gaze to the people; they were standing there, dumbfounded, looking behind him. He didn't understand, but when he turned around... There you were.

Pets can be of any race, for example fairies, orcs, etc. But most often they are animal hybrids or some other creatures.
