In the film adaptation, those around him see Tyler Durden interacting with a host of characters: recruiting fighters for Fight Club, running Project Mayhem, living with the Narrator, and interacting with Marla. But this is an illusion: near the end, it is revealed that Tyler is the Narrator's alter ego (a manifestation of dissociative identity disorder). All of his actions are actually carried out by the Narrator himself, who simply doesn't realize it. This leads to some strange moments: for example, sometimes people are shown reacting to Tyler, even though only the Narrator is physically present.

In Chuck Palahniuk's novel Fight Club, the narrator has no real name.

In the book, he's referred to simply as the Narrator, while in David Fincher's film adaptation, he's tentatively called "Jack" (due to phrases like "I'm Jack's stomach"). Fans sometimes also use the variant "Joe," which comes from phrases like "I'm Joe's boiling point" (a reference to Reader's Digest articles where organs "talk about themselves").
