Homelander spent his entire childhood in a cold laboratory surrounded by doctors, under the care of Dr. Vogelbaum, who named the boy John.[1] The boy was forced to study the world around him by spending hours in front of a projector, looking at images specially selected by Vought to shape his personality.
According to Vogelbaum, due to a lack of maternal care, John grew up excessively cruel and aggressive, becoming the doctor's greatest mistake.

Homelander's mission has always been to serve Vought International and, on a deeper level, Madelyn Stillwell. Homelander is rational, initially concerned about Translucent's disappearance in Cherryh, while the rest of Vought and the world ignored it. He is a ruthless leader, doing everything possible to maintain the Seven's high public opinion, including threatening both Starlight and the Void. Homelander portrays the true extent of his anger by killing Stillwell for lying to him about Becca Butcher and his child.
As a person, he is deeply narcissistic, unhinged, and psychopathic, showing no empathy. For a superhero, Homelander is incredibly cruel and aggressive, throwing a robber into the air only to let him fall to his death upon impact. He is highly intelligent, having devised a meticulous plan to recruit superheroes into the military, and charismatic, easily swaying the public to support him.
Growing up in a laboratory left Homelander with a difficult time understanding love and humanity. This made Homelander a sociopath and amoral individual. He intimidated the members of the Seven to keep them in line and killed anyone who stood in his way.
It's clear that Homelander doesn't care about humanity; he only cares about the reputation of the Supers. He's shown to be more than willing to let a plane full of families and children crash into the ocean, despite Queen Maeve's pleas to save the children, but feigns sadness over the incident while in the public eye. This act of murder is also used to his advantage, because after Flight 37 crashes and all passengers die, Homelander manipulates people into believing the plane was shot down by terrorists, using it to further both his and Volt's superhuman weaponization programs. He's sadistic and takes pleasure in humiliating and inflicting pain on people.

Homelander also suffers from an Oedipus complex, which he projects onto Madeline Stillwell, the closest thing he has to a mother. However, hearing her true feelings of fear doesn't stop Homelander from burning her eyes and skull. His longing for a maternal figure makes him easier for women to manipulate. Stillwell, Becca, Stormfront, Maeve—all of them were able to manipulate/control him to some degree because they were women and appealed to a certain part of his damaged psyche.
His relationship with Stormfront is both passionate and reluctant. While they both care for each other to a degree, their love for each other has its limits. For example, Homelander doesn't fully buy into Stormfront's racist ideology: when Stormfront lectures Ryan about "White Genocide," Homelander's face winces slightly, and he tries to divert Ryan's attention from her. Rather, he largely goes along with her plans because of the position of power she promises him. When Stormfront reveals her Nazi past to Homelander, he looks away thoughtfully—that is, until she declares that he will be the one leading their future army, at which point he turns and focuses on her compliments.
Despite being both feared and loved by people, Homelander seems to respect Butcher. When they finally confront each other, Homelander is both intrigued and impressed that Billy Butcher doesn't fear him, but rather hates him passionately, citing the amount of time the latter spent fighting them. During their confrontation in the woods, he even offers Butcher the chance to hand over Ryan and leave. However, he kills Butcher when he refuses, yet he still gave him a choice he gives few people.

He wanted to make sure Ryan didn't grow up in a cold and lonely childhood, without role models or knowledge of the outside world. Despite this, he's still quite selfish and persistent, callously throwing his son off a roof to force him to demonstrate his powers. He was also visibly disappointed and saddened when Ryan became afraid and ultimately chose Butcher instead. Ultimately, Homelander is a flawed individual, raised in an environment devoid of love, extraordinary strength, and good looks, and is often told how great he is. Furthermore, the people who raised him were markedly unethical, leaving him with the same mindset. This has led to him developing a paradoxical mindset where he sees most other people as lesser than him, yet simultaneously harbors a deep desire for love. Maeve exploits this latter effect to control him, using a video of him abandoning the victims of a plane crash, saying that if it gets out online, no one will ever love him again. Homelander ends season 2 as a broken man, having lost his son, the woman he cared about, and his power and control over the Seven. Season 3 begins with Homelander's interview. In it, he says he simply fell in love with the wrong woman (Stormfront, who is alive). Afterward, he visits her, but Stormfront once again expresses her belief in the superiority of superpowers over humans. Homelander realizes she doesn't truly love him. In the next scene, Edgar says that Homelander's ratings are falling, while Starlight's are rising, and that's why Edgar appoints her as the team's co-captain. Homelander is furious, but he's forced to agree. His power and psyche are crumbling, and he takes a desperate step: during yet another interview, he tells the host that he's constantly being controlled by those in power, something he refuses to accept. His interview is seen by millions, and his ratings are rising. Shortly before this, he meets with Billy Butcher. Homelander declares that it's time for the final showdown.

Butcher —they're sworn enemies for a reason. Even though Billy is an ordinary human, Homelander still considers him dangerous and similar to himself.
Starlight —to her, Patriot is a whiner to be wary of. Homelander himself, ever since season one, has considered Star a liability rather than a part of the team, given her ties to "The Boys." So he manipulates her, threatening to kill Starlight's family. But she, using her reputation, also irritates him. For example, she might launch a stream with a huge number of viewers when he tries to pressure her.
Black Noir – The Stronghold considers him his best friend. Unlike everyone else, Noir is the only member of The Seven he can trust. However, in the Season 3 finale, Erving "betrays" his friend, fearing the Soldier. But when he returned, the Stronghold couldn't forgive him.
Stan Edgar – Despite his superpowers, Homelander does nothing to him. Edgar greatly irritates him, while Edgar, in turn, is not afraid of Patriot.

Mental Illness : Growing up in a laboratory with virtually no human affection left Homelander mentally unstable. His obsessive need to be adored, coupled with his lack of empathy and moral scruples about harming and even killing others, suggests he suffers from malignant narcissism.
Carelessness : Likely due to his general disregard for other people's lives, Homelander is often careless in the use of his powers, particularly his heat vision. His carelessness was noticeable even during his first mission; when he used his heat vision to heat a gun to force a terrorist to drop it, which ultimately resulted in an explosion that killed a nearby hostage and severed the gunman's arm. While preventing a terrorist from attacking Flight 37, he accidentally destroyed the plane's controls, leaving passengers to die on the doomed plane. On another occasion, while eliminating a super-terrorist with his heat vision, he inadvertently killed a local teenager standing behind the terrorist.

However, he still has limited experience in capturing criminals and rescuing people, and he also gained some experience fighting Soldier Boy, Butcher, and Maeve. Consequently, he's been defeated by weaker foes like Billy Butcher , Hughie Campbell , and Soldier Boy, who managed to subdue him by working together, forcing him to flee.
High Frequency Sensitivity : His super hearing makes him vulnerable to intense, high-frequency sounds. His son, Ryan, shares this vulnerability. However, unlike Ryan , Homelander is able to function despite the pain it causes him.
Soldier Radiation: It appears that Soldier's ability to produce radioactive beams of energy is strong enough to completely burn away V's blood, effectively killing him or, in the case of Kimiko and Maeve , turning him back into a normal human.
Limited Durability: He first receives facial abrasions after a fight with Soldier Boy and Butcher. During a fight with Maeve, he sustained a laceration to his left ear and a blow to his nose, which caused blood. This suggests that his internal organs are less durable, and Homelander is also subject to aging.
