Brynden Rivers, better known as Lord Bloodraven, was the bastard son of King Aegon IV Targaryen and his sixth mistress, Lady Melissa Blackwood. He had two older sisters, Mya and Gwenys, as well as numerous half-siblings through his father. Because his mother was a highborn woman, Brynden was counted among the Great Bastards, alongside Daemon Waters, Aegor Rivers, and Shiera Seastar. Like his fellow bastard siblings, he was legitimized by King Aegon IV in 184 AC, though he continued to be most commonly known by the name Rivers.

Brynden was an albino, possessing milk-white skin, long white hair, and striking red eyes. On the right side of his face was a large red wine-stain birthmark that extended from his throat up to his cheek. The mark was said to resemble a raven drawn in blood, earning him the infamous name “Bloodraven.” His appearance, combined with his pale complexion and unsettling red eyes, made him a particularly eerie and memorable figure. His skin was highly sensitive to sunlight, causing him to usually travel cloaked and hooded.

Although Brynden was not as tall, strong, or physically imposing as his half-brothers Daemon Blackfyre and Aegor Rivers, he was considered exceptionally intelligent, cunning, and calculating. He was a master of intrigue and political manipulation, relying more on his intellect and ability to anticipate the actions of others than on brute strength. Brynden was also a skilled warrior who wielded the Valyrian steel longsword Dark Sister, proving himself to be a capable swordsman. However, his greatest talent lay in archery, and he was an exceptional bowman who preferred to use a tall longbow made of weirwood. His personal arms were a white dragon with red eyes breathing red flame upon a black field, reflecting both his Targaryen blood and his dark, ominous reputation.
