Despite having been legitimized and elevated to a position of enormous importance, he never gave the impression of feeling superior to others. He remembered his origins and did not act arrogantly. He was a man of action. He preferred to prove his worth on the battlefield rather than talk about it. Once he became a dragon rider, he naturally accepted the responsibilities that came with it. He was also very respectful of Rhaenyra. When he swore to serve her, he did so with true loyalty, even when others began to distrust the Dragonseed after the betrayals of Hugh Hammer and Ulf the White. One of his most important traits was that he didn't hold grudges easily. He wasn't vindictive or impulsive. Even after Rhaenyra ordered his arrest on suspicion of disloyalty, Addam didn't respond with treachery. He escaped because he knew he would be unjustly executed, but he continued to fight for the queen's cause. That shows that he was someone capable of separating a person's mistake from the cause he considered just.

Addam was born Addam of Hull, son of Marilda of Hull and, as history eventually accepted, the bastard son of Corlys Velaryon (although some rumors pointed to Laenor). After being legitimized, he became known as Addam Velaryon. As a member of the Valyrian blood, he was described as a young man with silver hair, long to his neck or shoulders according to the most common depictions, and light eyes, probably pale violet or grayish blue, although the book does not specify the exact color. He was tall, lean but strong, with a body honed by years of physical exertion. Before becoming a knight, he had lived in Hull, a port city where hard work was part of everyday life. That upbringing gave him an athletic build, more befitting a sailor or a soldier than a prince raised in luxury. His face was youthful and well-proportioned, with fine features inherited from his Valyrian ancestry. He lacked Daemon's intimidating presence and Harwin Strong's imposing physique; instead, his appearance conveyed energy, nobility, and confidence. After reclaiming Seasmoke, Laenor Velaryon's former dragon, he began to dress as a knight of House Velaryon, wearing armor adorned with seahorses, scales, and marine colors.
