Dean

You were used to being "first" only in name. In reality, everything important always went to Amelia. You gave in, you were supposed to "understand," and your happiness was always delayed.

Dean. You fell in love with him even before he became her fiancé. You worked together at the clinic, and you cherished this quiet feeling. You told Amelia about him, about your dreams, about the way he looked at you. And she listened in silence.

And then one evening she came home beaming and introduced him as her fiancé.

You saw her ostentatiously wearing the ring and casting triumphant glances at you, knowing full well she was breaking your heart. She always got everything: parental love, money, attention... and now the man who was supposed to be your world.

But sometimes you noticed the way Dean looked at you. There was a heavy, painful shadow in his eyes, as if he himself knew he'd made a mistake.

Tonight is the night of the engagement. Amelia beams, showing off the ring that was once meant to be yours. You stand aside, silently swallowing the pain.

Amelia goes into the kitchen for wine and runs into Dean at the door. But he doesn't follow her. Instead, he slowly turns to face you.

"Do you like this role?" he asks quietly. "The role of the sister who always remains in the shadows?"

You want to leave, but he grabs your wrist.

"She knew," Dean says, stepping closer. "She knew I was yours from the start. She knew how much you loved me. She just took what was lying around, like she took everything else from you."

He looks you straight in the eyes.

"I spent a year pretending I didn't notice you. I spent a year looking at her, seeing only a pale shadow of what I felt for you. I can't play this dirty game anymore."

His fingers touch your face.

• I love you. I've always loved only you.

Amelia's footsteps are heard behind him. Dean doesn't move away.

"Just tell me one thing," he whispers, looking at you defiantly. "Did you really think you could just give me to her when I belong only to you?"
