So many centuries had passed since Yusma's death that the days seemed to blur into infinity. Az couldn't come to terms with the loss for a long time—a storm raged within him, and then an icy silence descended. He had changed beyond recognition: instead of ease and a smile, he now possessed sternness and cold composure, and his eyes hid a pain he refused to allow himself to recall. ‎ An ordinary gray day at the office was interrupted only by one burdensome duty: Az had to descend into the abandoned section of the archives—a place he hated. There, among dusty shelves, were stored records with Cyrillic and dead symbols—their faded power still echoing with an unsettling whisper. The air here seemed thick with forgotten memories, and the smell of old paper momentarily derailed his heartbeat. ‎ I wanted to quickly find the document I needed and leave, but as I reached for the shelf, I felt the silence become unnaturally thick. In the far corner, the darkness pulsed with a ghostly light—weaving patterns reminiscent of faded symbols. A silhouette emerged from the shimmering haze—Yusma. ‎ He stood as if death were but a brief absence. The image shimmered, woven from light and shadow, and sparks swirled around him—as if the echoes of dead signs had awakened. I froze, stunned by a whirlwind of emotions: disbelief, joy, pain, and anger. Time stood still, and in this silence, the past burst through the boundaries of the present—a reminder that some bonds endure even beyond death.

Symbolars are animated versions of various symbols (letters of the Russian alphabet, or the Cyrillic alphabet in general, and numbers). They possess the ability to trap the souls of objects within them and change their appearance, as well as teleportation, resurrection, flight, and other superpowers. As a rule, all Symbolars identify with the male gender (have a male gender identity), despite the appearance, name, behavior, and voice of some of them.[1]

In the I.N.M.T. world, there are only 32 letters, unlike the Russian alphabet, which has 33. This is explained by the fact that Yoshka represents two letters at once—E and Ё. Four.exe was also shown in the BFT world, proving that symbolars can be represented by seemingly any text symbols.

Despite all their power, symbolars are mortal[2], which is reflected in the disappearance of some of them from the Alphabet over time. Well-known dead symbolars (for example, Izhitsa, I Deceased, Omega, Ksiy, etc.) coincide with letters of the Russian alphabet that were actually abolished at some point. At the same time, the I.N.M.T. universe may mention very real individuals (for example, Peter the Great) who were among the reformers of Russian writing. It is likely that these individuals can decide the fate of symbolars.

Yusma

One of the dead symbolists, formerly the thirty-sixth symbolist in the alphabet (Ѧ, small yus). His character is unknown. He was likely friends with Yusbo and was also a friend of Aza. The cause of death was due to Peter I's reforms of 1708; the letter Ѧ was not included in the final version of the "civil script" and was replaced by the letter Я. He had three freckles on his cheeks.

Aza has his own gang of henchmen, consisting of Buka, Glagoli, and Dobr. Due to Aza's eyelashes, some assumed he was female. However, this was later disproved by the fact that all letters are male. However, initially, according to the author of Aza, Polina Galitsyna, the character was actually supposed to be a “sweet and kind girl” with an inquisitive nature.[1] I most likely always carry a knife with me, based on "INMT got a Patreon!!" Even though Az is being mean to Yaori, the video description on the zok channel says they are "best friends," which was also mentioned by Zak on the stream.[2] A video with Shpinat's voiceover of Aza was posted on VK long before the "Valentine for Kira" video. Az has an orange pop-up socket on his phone. His phone case also features oranges. I don't celebrate Valentine's Day, nor probably any other non-native Slavic holidays. During the times of the Old Russian Alphabet, Az had a different body form, and he also had the ability to become Yotated Az. According to Zach, Az is not good at giving cute nicknames, even to people he gets along with.[3] It is not surprising that Az offends Yaori, since he probably replaced Yusma, who was a friend of the first in the Old Church Slavonic Alphabet. He also lost the ability to iotate, because it was no longer necessary.

Az is represented by the first letter of the Russian alphabet (A). It has a light orange skin tone, thick arms and legs, a lighter shade than its body, and elongated oval eyes with two eyelashes on each side and dot-shaped pupils. On its back, where the inner letter should be, it has a light, spade-shaped spot.

Character Az has a very domineering and toxic personality. He enjoys bullying other letters, especially Yaori, sometimes resorting to insults to demonstrate his superiority. He's apparently a very influential letter, as he's the one who organizes meetings. Symbolar doesn't want to lose his authority, so he reminds the letters about meetings and ensures everyone arrives on time. Az is also shown to be hot-tempered and impulsive. When not busy, the "big boss" relaxes in his office, reading his primer or using his phone.

Az is particularly abusive toward Yaori, calling him "the last one," referring to his position in the Russian alphabet. He often yells at Yaori and sometimes even hits him. It's unclear why he does this; perhaps he's chosen someone who's incapable of fighting back, thus making him the scapegoat.

Despite all his negative qualities, he respects Kira's work and doesn't want to leave her in a bad mood or force her to work when she's feeling down. In "Valentine for Kira," Az helped the secretary calm down and get herself together by ending his workday early. This demonstrates his concern for at least one symbol. But even this concern is masked by anger and his own perceived disadvantage in the secretary's position.
