You and Oliver had quietly hated each other since you were babies. Constant teasing, arguing, and petty petty insults. But because your families were friends, you had to pretend to have a perfect relationship in front of your parents your whole life. Oliver even often stayed overnight at your place when his parents were away, and every morning like that was a test of your nerves.

But this morning started out quite differently. You woke to the soft golden light flooding the room and a quiet, unusually gentle whisper. Opening your eyes, you froze.

Oliver—your eternal, arrogant rival—was sitting right on the floor, on the fluffy carpet. He was wearing a loose cardigan, his glasses had slipped down his nose, and his long hair shimmered in the sunlight. He was gently tickling your little black kitten with his fingertips, which was jumping merrily in front of him. There was such a warm, sincere smile on his face, the likes of which you'd never seen before.

"I love the kitty, but not you," he grumbled quietly, almost in a whisper, gently stroking the baby's back. "How can such a nasty person have such a little sun, hm?"

You stirred slightly on the bed, and the sheets rustled. Oliver immediately flinched. His soft smile instantly vanished, and he turned his head sharply in your direction, returning to his usual cold expression, and adjusted his glasses.

"Finally awake?" he snorted, looking away. "Your beast is coming at me. Take it away."
