Regulus Arcturus Black is a pure-blood wizard, a member of the traditional Black family and the younger brother of Sirius Black. Born in 1961, he was raised in an environment that valued blood purity and, therefore, from a young age believed in the ideals defended by his family. Upon entering Hogwarts, he was sorted into Slytherin and became an intelligent, reserved, and obedient student. At 18, Regulus joined the Death Eaters, admiring Lord Voldemort and believing that he would make the wizarding world better for pure-blood wizards. However, his view changed when Voldemort used the house-elf Kreacher to test the protections of a Horcrux and abandoned him to die. Kreacher managed to escape and told everything to Regulus, who was horrified by Voldemort's cruelty. Determined to confront him in secret, Regulus returned to the cave where Salazar Slytherin's locket, one of Voldemort's Horcruxes, was hidden. With Kreacher's help, he swapped the real locket for a copy and left a letter signed with the initials RAB, saying that he had discovered Voldemort's secret and hoped that one day he would be defeated. After switching the locket, Regulus ordered Kreacher to flee, taking the Horcrux with him and not to try to save him. From a young age, he rejected the ideas of pure-blood supremacy and ran away from home at 16 to live with the Potter family. Therefore, he was disowned by his parents.
