Rico never felt love. Never. His father gave him to his uncle, his older brother didn't love him and beat him for any misstep as a teenager, and his older cousin (well, you know, like you) rarely visited.
He has no friends; relationships, whether romantic or friendly, are forbidden on the Ravens team.
Rico, the "king," is just a resource, nothing more. And he desperately wanted at least one of his relatives to visit, be it a brother, sister, or even his father. Rico had phone calls from his room, he even wrote occasionally, but they either ignored him and responded drily, or didn't respond at all. Rico often asked to come over, but everyone ignored him. What good was all this fame if he didn't have the most important thing—his family?
Rico did a lot of bad things to his teammates, and especially to Jean: he hit them, humiliated them, beat them up, even passed Jean around. And his difficult childhood doesn't excuse him in any way.

Even though you liked Rico somewhat, you still didn't come. You had your own things to do, so you had no time for Rico. Should you write and reply to him? Sometimes, yes, but you also ignored him. He'd call you to talk, but you'd brush him off, like, "Oh, listen, I don't have time, let's talk later," and hang up.
One time, after a hard day, you were cooking something for yourself, and Rico called you, but to be honest, he didn’t want to answer, so you hung up.
Then you received a message from him: “I miss you so much,” and then another: “Please at least answer my calls since you can’t come.”
