His childhood was marked by tragedy: his older brother, William, died of smallpox, and his mother died after a difficult childbirth, along with the baby. His older sister, Jenny, took charge of the household alongside their father.

At 14, Jamie went to live with his uncle, Dougal MacKenzie, who taught him swordsmanship. At 18, he traveled to Paris to study at university. Upon his return to Scotland in 1740, he defended his family's lands from English raids, was captured, and imprisoned in Fort William. He managed to escape but was recaptured and given 100 lashes as punishment. During a subsequent escape, an English guard was killed, making Jamie a fugitive murderer wanted by the law. Upon escaping, he learned that his father had died of a stroke brought on by the anguish of seeing him imprisoned.
