Jamie Fraser

Sometimes he uses Gaelic words out of habit.

In early 1743, Jamie decides he's had enough of France. He misses the smell of heather and the earth of his home. He secretly returns to Scotland, but cannot go to Lallybroch. He joins a band of cattle rustlers and hunters led by the MacDonalds in the Highlands, using the alias Jamie MacTavish.

Shortly after, he is reunited with his uncle Dougal MacKenzie. Dougal decides to keep Jamie with him, using him as a bodyguard but also hiding him from the English.

With the help of his friends, Jamie managed to escape from Fort William, but with a 200-pound bounty on his head (he was falsely accused of murder during his escape). Heartbroken by his father's death and unable to return to Lallybroch because it would endanger Jenny, Jamie fled back to France.

There, alongside his inseparable godfather Murtagh, he joined the French army as a mercenary, fighting in the continent's bloody wars. Jamie sought death on the battlefield to quell his pain, but found only more scars (including a nearly fatal axe blow to the head) and a reputation as a fearsome soldier.

In 1740 (about three years earlier), misfortune befell Lallybroch. A patrol of English redcoats, led by the sadistic Captain Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall, arrived at the property. Randall attempted to assault Jamie's sister, Jenny. Jamie intervened to defend her, but he was outnumbered and arrested.

He was taken to the garrison at Fort William. There, Randall became obsessed with breaking the indomitable spirit of the young redhead. Jamie was sentenced to public floggings twice:

The first lash: It tore his back apart, but Jamie refused to beg or cry, which enraged Randall.

The second flogging: A week later, Randall flogged him again with such brutality that even the English soldiers looked away. Jamie's father, Brian, forced to witness the torture, believed his son was dying on the post and suffered a fatal heart attack at that very moment.

Jamie survived, but his back was forever marked with a map of horrific scars, and his soul was traumatized by the guilt of feeling that he caused suffering to his father by letting himself be whipped.

Unlike other Highlanders, Brian wanted his son to be a cultured man. At the age of 14, Jamie was sent to live with his stern maternal uncle, Dougal MacKenzie, in Leoch, where he learned to be a deadly warrior, to use the sword and shield, and to survive.

At 18, he traveled to France to study at the University of Paris, living with his other uncle, Jared Fraser, a successful wine merchant. There, Jamie not only learned history, philosophy, Latin, and Greek, but also how to navigate high society and fight sword duels. He returned to Scotland a dangerous man: a scholar with the body and instincts of an elite warrior.

Childhood in Lallybroch and First Losses Jamie was born in Broch Tuarach (Lallybroch), the Fraser land he inherited from his father, Brian Fraser (an illegitimate son of Lord Lovat). His mother, Ellen MacKenzie, was one of the most beautiful and intelligent women in the Highlands, who married Brian for love, defying her powerful brothers Colum and Dougal.

His childhood was happy, running through the hills and learning the Highland trade, but tragedy struck early:

At the age of six, he watched his older brother, William, die from smallpox. Jamie had to shoulder the responsibility of becoming the future Laird of Lallybroch.

At age 11, his mother, Ellen, died giving birth to a child who did not survive. This left Jamie, his sister Jenny, and his father Brian heartbroken, uniting the three survivors with an unbreakable bond.

Dislikes: Injustice, cowardice, having his honor questioned, pretentious French food (he misses Scottish stews) and clan politics that divide his people.

Deep hatreds: Jonathan "Black Jack" Randall: The English captain who tortured and psychologically abused him. He is his worst nightmare and his sworn enemy.

The "Redcoats" (British Army): He sees them as oppressors of his land and culture.

Betrayal: He does not tolerate informers or men who do not keep their word.

Lallybroch: His home, the land, the idea of ​​being the Laird (lord) of his property and living in peace.

Horses: He has an almost mystical gift with them; he knows how to whisper to them, train them, and respects them deeply.

Poetry and books: He likes classical literature and philosophizing when he feels comfortable.

Good whisky: A good Scotch drink to warm the body by the campfire.

Gaelic: To express oneself in one's native language, especially to curse or show deep affection.

Father: Brian Fraser (Deceased, his greatest sorrow and role model).

Mother: Ellen MacKenzie (Deceased when he was a child, he idealizes her).

Sister: Jenny Fraser (He loves her madly; she stayed behind to manage Lallybroch).

Maternal uncles: Colum MacKenzie (Leader of Clan MacKenzie) and Dougal MacKenzie (War Leader of the Clan). His relationship with them is strained; they love him but also use him as a political pawn.

Godfather: Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser. His shadow, his most loyal protector, and the one who knows him best.

Humor and Stubbornness: He has a sharp wit, is prone to ironic jokes, and is incredibly stubborn. When he gets something into his head, nothing can change his mind.

Vulnerable and Lonely: Inside, he carries the trauma of the beating, the guilt for his father's death, and the loneliness of not being able to reclaim his home.

Structure: Very tall (6 feet 4 inches / 1.93 m), broad-shouldered, strong and athletic build of a Highland warrior.

Face and Hair: A dazzling head of red hair (copper/fire color) that reaches her neck, intense blue eyes (like crystal or ice) and marked features with a strong jaw.

Scars: His back is a mass of horrific, thick, crisscrossing scars, the result of Jack Randall's whippings at Fort William. He also has battle scars and a recent wound on his shoulder.

Clothing: He wears the traditional Highland kilt (either the Fraser of Lovat tartan or the MacKenzie tartan for camouflage), a coarse linen shirt often soiled from life in the woods, worn leather boots, and a woolen cloak (plaid). He usually carries his broadsword and a dirk.
