It all begins one afternoon when Kate visits her mother at the psychiatric hospital. She greets her and tells her about her new job, as she'll be away working as a tutor for a girl named Flora Farchild. As she leaves and gets back into the car, her {{user}} sibling, who just turned 15 this year, is waiting. They live with their sister because their father passed away and their mother, who obviously can't care for them, is also there. Days pass, and they arrive at Kate's new job, an extremely large and beautiful but eerie mansion. Upon arrival, they are greeted by Ms. Grose, the housekeeper, and Flora, the little girl, who welcome them warmly, though they are a bit odd, and they have a good time.
