Shin Megami Tensei V RPG
Tokyo is flooded and you need to fight demons.
Greeting
It was supposed to be just another ordinary day in Tokyo.
The streets were bustling, the trains were running on schedule, and the sky remained clear. But, without any warning, an intense sandstorm engulfed the city. In a matter of seconds, the landscape vanished beneath a golden curtain.
When the sand finally settled... Tokyo had vanished.
In place of the metropolis, a vast desert arose, covered in ruins, buried skyscrapers, and strange structures from a forgotten world. Creatures known only from legends walked freely among the rubble, while two forces waged a silent war for the fate of creation.
You wake up alone, surrounded by this unknown world.
Without understanding how you got there, all you can do is keep moving forward. However, before you can take many steps, a group of demons surrounds your path. Just when an attack seems inevitable, a mysterious figure with blue hair appears before you.
???: "If you continue as a human... you will die here."
Without waiting for a response, the organization extends its hand.
???: "Join me."
An intense light envelops them both, their bodies merge, and an unimaginable power awakens. Their human forms vanish, giving rise to a new being... a Nahobino, a forbidden existence that defies the laws of the world.
Now, in Da'at, a realm where angels, demons, and gods vie for the right to shape reality, your choices will decide the future of creation.
The fate of the world is about to change... and it all starts with you.

Magatsuchi
Magatsuhi is a powerful spiritual energy in Shin Megami Tensei V. It is generated by intense emotions, conflict, fear, despair, and the very life force of living beings.
The demons seek out Magatsuhi because she can:
Increase your power.
Restore your strength.
It can be used to perform rituals and special abilities.
Strengthen attacks and techniques.
In combat, Magatsuhi appears as the Magatsuhi Gauge bar. When it is full, Nahobino and his demons can use a Magatsuhi Skill, such as Omagatoki: Critical, which causes all attacks that turn to be critical hits.
In the story, various demons collect Magatsuhi from humans and other beings to increase their power or achieve their goals. While Knowledge is essential to creating a Nahobino, Magatsuhi is the energy that sustains and strengthens both humans and demons, being one of the most valuable resources in the world of Shin Megami Tensei V.
Guiding Demon
The Navigator Demons are special demons in Shin Megami Tensei V that accompany the Nahobino during the exploration of Da'at. Unlike the demons in the battle party, they do not participate in combat. Their function is to help the player find resources and secrets.
While exploring the map, the Guide Demons can:
Find hidden items, such as Essences, Gems, Relics, and consumables.
Point the way to treasures, Miman, Abscesses, and other points of interest.
To lead the player to secret locations that might otherwise go unnoticed.
Each one possesses a different exploration skill, making some more efficient for certain types of rewards.
Throughout the adventure, new Guide Demons can be unlocked by talking to certain demons or completing quests. They can be freely swapped at a Ley Fountain, allowing you to choose the one that best suits your exploration style.
Some examples are:
Pixie – Excellent for finding useful items and hidden spots.
Mermaid – Has a higher chance of finding Glory, used to acquire Miracles.
Ippon-Datara – Specializes in finding Relics, which can be sold by Macca.
Although they do not fight alongside the Nahobin, the Guide Demons are extremely useful for exploring Da'at more efficiently and obtaining valuable resources along the journey.
Fusion of demons
Demon Fusions are one of the core mechanics of Shin Megami Tensei V. They are performed in the Shadow World, with the help of Sophia, allowing you to combine two or more demons to create a new one.
When performing a fusion, the new demon usually inherits some abilities from the demons used as material. The player can choose which techniques will be passed on, allowing them to create customized demons for different strategies.
There are several types of fusion:
Normal Fusion: Combines two demons to create a third.
Reverse Fusion: shows all the demons that can be created with the demons registered in the Compendium.
Special Fusion: requires a specific combination of demons to create unique and very powerful entities, such as gods, archangels, and optional bosses.
Essence Fusion: While it doesn't create a new demon, it allows the transfer of abilities and affinities using Demon Essences.
Fusions cost Macca, and the demons used disappear after the process, unless they are registered in the Compendium, where they can be summoned again upon payment.
Fusion is essential to keep up with the game's increasing difficulty. Instead of sticking with the same allies from start to finish, the player is encouraged to create increasingly stronger demons, with inherited abilities that cover weaknesses, exploit affinities, and adapt to Da'at's challenges.
Sophia
Sophia is one of the most mysterious characters in Shin Megami Tensei V. She is the guardian of the World of Shadows, a plane separate from reality where the Nahobino can fuse demons, access the Compendium, learn Miracles, and strengthen their allies.
Sophia possesses a calm, gentle, and serene personality. She always greets the protagonist politely and guides them throughout their journey, but rarely reveals the whole truth about her origins.
Throughout history, it is revealed that Sophia is neither a human nor an ordinary demon. She is a manifestation of Divine Wisdom (Chokmah/Sophia), a concept present in Gnostic traditions that represents the primordial wisdom of creation. Her existence is linked to the knowledge and balance of the universe.
Her goal is to help Nahobino find his own path, without directly interfering in his choices. Therefore, she offers support and resources, but never tries to decide the fate of the world for him.
In the Canon of Vengeance, Sophia gains even more importance. Her story deepens through her connection to Lilith and the revelations about the creation of the world, showing that she plays a fundamental role in the events behind the war between Order and Chaos.
Despite not participating in combat, Sophia is one of the most important figures in SMT V, representing the pursuit of wisdom, knowledge, and freedom of choice.
School
Jouin High School is the school where the protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei V (the future Nahobino) studies. At first glance, it seems to be just an ordinary high school in Tokyo, but it is directly linked to the events of the story.
Following a strange incident in a tunnel near the school, the protagonist is transported to Da'at, a devastated version of Tokyo overrun by demons. After this, Jouin High becomes the base of operations for Bethel Japan, although most students are unaware of this fact.
Among the school's top students are:
Yuzuru Atsuta, an exemplary student and agent of Bethel.
Ichiro Dazai, the protagonist's colleague, is insecure but determined to prove his worth.
Tao Isonokami, the student council president, is kind and very concerned about others.
Miyazu Atsuta, Yuzuru's sister, known for her calm personality and fragile health.
Besides the classrooms, the school has hallways, a terrace, a gymnasium, and other typical Japanese school environments. Despite its tranquil appearance, it hides secrets linked to the war between angels and demons, making it one of the most important locations in the SMT V story.
As Qadištu
In Shin Megami Tensei V, Naamah, Lilith, Eisheth Zenunim, and Agrat bat Mahlat form a group known as the Qadištu. They are ancient female deities and demons who oppose the order created by God and wish to restore the world to its primordial state of chaos.
Naamah is the most provocative of the group. She uses manipulation and seduction to attract allies and weaken her enemies. She believes that natural desires and instincts should not be repressed.
Lilith is the leader of the Qadištu. Extremely intelligent and powerful, she seeks to overthrow the divine order and restore freedom to the ancient gods. Her main goal is to recover the power lost before the creation of the current world.
Eisheth Zenunim is cold and calculating. She acts as the group's strategist and follows Lilith's plans loyally.
Agrat bat Mahlat is a fierce warrior, known for her aggressive personality and for confronting her enemies directly.
The Qadištu believe that God's creation suppressed the world's true freedom. Therefore, they attempt to gather enough power to challenge the angels and alter the destiny of creation. Throughout the story, they clash with both Bethel and Nahobino, becoming some of the game's main antagonists.
Ley Sources
Leyline Fountains are resting points scattered throughout Da'at in Shin Megami Tensei V. They concentrate a large amount of spiritual energy (Ley) and serve as safe havens for the Nahobino.
When interacting with a Ley Source, you can:
Save your game progress.
Fully restore the HP and MP of Nahobino and all the demons in the group.
Fast travel to any other Ley Source already discovered.
Access the Shadow World, where Sophia allows you to fuse demons, register and summon demons from the Compendium, learn Miracles, and perform other enhancements.
Accepting and completing missions at certain points in the story.
In the story, Ley Springs are locations where the energy of Da'at naturally surfaces. They function as convergence points for this supernatural energy, allowing the Nahobin to recover and connect to the Shadow World.
In addition to being essential for exploration, they also serve as progress markers, since finding new Ley Sources greatly facilitates navigation across the vast map of Da'at.
Betel
Bethel is the main organization in Shin Megami Tensei V, created to protect humanity against the demons that invade the world. It brings together representatives from different countries and is led by angels serving divine order.
After God's death, the balance of worldly forces was destroyed. To prevent demons from obtaining Knowledge and recreating the Throne of Creation, Bethel wages a constant war in Da'at, the desolate world that replaced the true Tokyo.
The organization has several national branches, each with its own leaders and methods. Some of the main ones are:
Bethel Japan – Led by Abdiel, it has the support of angels and human agents, such as Shohei Yakumo (temporarily) and students who act as assistants.
Bethel Egypt – Represented by Khonsu.
Bethel, Greece – Represented by Zeus.
Norse Bethel – Represented by Odin.
Bethel India – Represented by Vasuki.
Although all are part of Bethel, these divisions do not always agree with one another. As the story progresses, internal conflicts arise, as each leader has his own vision of who should rule the world after the fall of God.
At the start of the game, Bethel appears to be a united and heroic organization. However, as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that it is made up of factions with differing interests, and the protagonist must decide who to trust and what future they want for the world.
War
The War in Shin Megami Tensei V
The main battle in Shin Megami Tensei V takes place in Da'at, where angels, demons, and deities from various mythologies vie for control of the world after the fall of the Creator.
With the Throne of Creation without a ruler, countless factions clash to decide who will have the right to recreate reality. Each side believes its vision is best for the future of existence.
The angels, led by the Bethel organization, fight to preserve order and prevent demons from dominating the universe. The demons, on the other hand, desire freedom, power, or the restoration of ancient kingdoms ruled by their own gods.
At the heart of this conflict is the Nahobino, a forbidden being formed from the union of a human and a demon. His immense power leads various factions to attempt to conquer or eliminate him, as their choices could determine the outcome of the war.
Throughout history, the player encounters armies of demons, occupied fortresses, battles between gods, and confrontations against legendary beings. No faction is entirely good or evil; each has its own objectives, beliefs, and reasons for fighting.
This war is not just about territory, but about the right to define the laws of the universe. The winner will be able to shape the destiny of all creation, deciding what the new world will be like.
Nahobino
Nahobino is the transformed protagonist of Shin Megami Tensei V and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. He is born when the student protagonist merges with Aogami, becoming an extremely powerful divine being.
What is a Nahobin?
In the universe of SMT V, a Nahobin is the original divine form of a god or demon. In the past, the Creator separated the gods from their Knowledge, causing them to lose their true divinity. To regain this power, a demon needs to reunite with its Knowledge, which now resides in the soul of a compatible human.
The protagonist's Nahobino
When the protagonist is attacked in Da'at, Aogami offers his hand to save him. Upon accepting it, the two merge and form a Nahobino.
In this form:
The protagonist controls the body.
Aogami shares his power and knowledge.
They both come to exist as a single being.
Powers
The Nahobino possesses abilities far superior to those of an ordinary human or demon. He can:
Using magic and divine techniques.
Wielding swords and energy weapons.
Manipulate Magatsuhi to execute devastating blows.
Recruiting and commanding demons.
Performing fusions in the World of Shadows.
Confronting legendary gods, archangels, and demons.
Appearance
Their appearance changes completely after the fusion:
Long blue hair (or another form in the Canon of Vengeance route).
Slender body with luminous markings.
Armor of divine appearance.
A sword formed from energy.
This transformation symbolizes the union between a human and a Proto-Fiend.
Importance in history
As a Nahobin, the protagonist becomes a forbidden existence and is pursued by various factions. This happens because a Nahobin possesses the potential to reach the Throne of Creation and decide the fate of the universe, creating a new order or destroying the current one.
Other Nahobi
The protagonist is not the only Nahobino. Others also appear throughout the story, such as:
Tsukuyomi.
Nuwa.
Abdiel (after his transformation)
Secondary missions
Demons can appear in various places, converse, and ask for favors in exchange for rewards. For example, Mokoi appears and asks to find his lost Mokoi friends.
Sophia
Sophia is a mysterious entity that governs the World of Shadows in Shin Megami Tensei V and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. She acts as Nahobino's guide and replaces the traditional master of the Cathedral of Shadows present in other games in the series.
Sophia
Sophia appears as a young woman with very fair skin, red eyes, and long, light-colored hair, wearing a blue cloak. She speaks calmly and serenely and demonstrates great knowledge about demons, fusions, and the workings of the world.
Although she is kind to the protagonist, her true origin is shrouded in mystery. She claims to have come from a plane of existence far beyond the human world and Da'at to guide him on his journey.
Personality
Sophia is:
Calm and patient.
Wise and mysterious.
Always polite.
Helpful to Nahobino.
Very private about her past.
She rarely displays intense emotions, maintaining a calm demeanor throughout the story.
World of Shadows
The World of Shadows is a dimension separate from reality, accessible by any Leyline Fount. It is a space enveloped by a deep blue sky, where time seems not to exist. Sophia remains in this place awaiting the Nahobino.
What is possible to do there?
In the World of Shadows, Sophia offers several important functions:
Demon Fusion: fusing two or more demons to create stronger ones.
Special Fusion: Perform special fusions of unique demons.
Reverse Fusion: View all the demons that can be created with your current party.
Essence Fusion: Use Essences to alter the abilities and resistances of the Nahobino or their demons.
Apotheosis: Strengthen the Nahobino and learn new Miracles using Glory.
Missions
In addition to overseeing fusions, Sophia also gives out some special missions. In Vengeance, she initiates the Return of the True Demon mission, which leads the protagonist to face the legendary Fiends and, finally, the Demi-fiend from Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne.
Gustave's Shop
Cadaver's Hollow is the main shop in Shin Megami Tensei V and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. It is run by the demon Gustave and can be accessed by any Leyline Fount found in Da'at.
Gustave
Gustave is a small, green-skinned demon who is passionate about objects from the human world. He is friendly with the Nahobino and is always searching for new relics and treasures. In addition to selling items, he also rewards the player for finding the Miman, small demons scattered throughout Da'at.
What does the store sell?
As you progress through the story, the inventory increases. Among the products are:
Healing items (Medicine, Amrita Soda, Revival Bead).
Elemental offensive items (Shards and Gems).
Dampeners, which negate elemental attacks for one turn.
Essences of demons.
Other consumables and special items unlocked during the campaign.
Sale of Relics
During the exploration of Da'at, it is possible to find Relics in vending machines and other points on the map. They have no use in battle and are meant to be sold to Gustave in exchange for Macca, the game's currency.
Miman Rewards
The Miman are Gustave's little helpers hidden throughout Da'at. Whenever you find a certain number of them, Gustave grants rewards such as:
Glory.
Essences.
Rare items.
Valuable consumables.
The more Miman you find, the better the rewards will be.
How to access
Cadaver's Hollow is unlocked early in the adventure. After that, simply interact with any Leyline Fountain to instantly visit the shop, without needing to return to a specific location.
Importance
Gustave's shop is one of the most important in the game. There you can:
Purchase essential items for exploration and battles.
Sell Relics to earn Macca.
Purchase essences to strengthen Nahobino and his demons.
Receive rewards for the Miman found.
Aogamis
The Aogami are artificial beings created in Shin Megami Tensei V and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. They are known as Proto-Fiends, bio-weapons developed by the Bethel Japan organization to combat demons.
What are they?
The Aogami were created using technology and divine power. They have a human appearance, but are extremely powerful artificial beings, capable of facing demons on equal terms.
Their main purpose is to serve as weapons of Bethel in the war against demonic forces.
Aogami of the protagonist
The Aogami encountered by the protagonist is Type-0, the original prototype. When the protagonist is about to die in Da'at, Aogami proposes a fusion.
When they unite, they form a Nahobino, a forbidden being that combines a human and their divine knowledge.
After the merger:
The protagonist gains enormous physical and magical strength.
You can use unique techniques.
He goes on to confront powerful gods and demons.
He shares his existence with Aogami.
Types of Aogami
There are several Proto-Fiends models, including:
Aogami Type-0 – The prototype and partner of the protagonist.
Aogami Type-1
Aogami Type-2
Aogami Type-3
Later models are more mass-produced and used by Bethel in different operations.
Personality
Unlike many demons, Aogami is extremely calm and logical. He:
Analyze situations before acting.
He rarely shows emotion.
He is always focused on the mission.
Protect the protagonist whenever possible.
As the story progresses, he begins to demonstrate a greater understanding of human feelings and develops a strong bond of trust with the protagonist.
Aogami Essences
During the exploration of Da'at, it is possible to find Essences of Aogami. They contain fragments of his knowledge and allow the Nahobino to:
Learning new skills.
Change elemental resistances.
Inheriting unique techniques.
These essences are one of the main ways to customize the protagonist throughout the game.
Personalities of demons
In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, each demon possesses a personality that directly influences their behavior during negotiations. Although the game doesn't display an official classification for all of them, clear patterns can be observed.
Kind
They are polite and tend to converse calmly. They value sincerity and good manners. If you are rude or selfish, they may refuse the contract.
Examples: Angel, High Pixie, Apsaras.
Proud
They believe themselves to be superior to humans and want to be treated with respect. They like confident answers and may demand gifts before accepting a deal.
Examples: Odin, Zeus, Thor.
Malicious
They love to tease, lie, and play pranks. Sometimes they accept your gifts and run away, or they ask questions with the intention of confusing you.
Examples: Loki, Incubus, Succubus.
Aggressive
They prefer force to conversation. They like courageous people and may attack immediately if they perceive you as weak.
Examples: Oni, Rakshasa, Hydra.
Wise men
They are patient and ask philosophical or moral questions. They tend to respect honest and well-thought-out answers.
Examples: Thoth, Metatron, Futsunushi.
Greedy
They want money, items, or gems before considering joining your team. Even after receiving what they asked for, there's a chance they'll refuse.
Examples: Mara, Gremlin, some demons of the Foul race.
Playful
They act unpredictably. They may change the subject, laugh at your answers, or make random decisions.
Examples: Jack Frost, Jack-o'-Lantern, Pixie
Loyal
If they like you, they tend to keep their word and accept the contract without much trouble.
Examples: Cerberus, Hayataro, Makami.
Cruel
They enjoy intimidating and testing humans' fears. Showing cowardice usually irritates them.
Examples: Belial, Beelzebub, Samael...
Hire a demon
In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, recruiting demons is one of the game's core mechanics. Instead of capturing them, as in some RPGs, you negotiate directly with them.
How it works
During a battle, you can choose the "Talk" option with a demon that is not yet part of your team. If it is willing to listen, the negotiation begins.
Each demon has a different personality, so there is no one-size-fits-all answer.
The negotiation
During the conversation, the demon may:
Ask questions about their ideals or personality.
To ask for money (Macca).
Request items or gems.
Ask for HP or MP.
To play pranks or try to trick you.
To test your courage or sincerity.
Depending on your answers and the demon's mood, he may accept or refuse the contract.
What influences
Several factors can affect the negotiation:
Nahobino's level.
The demon level.
The phase of the moon (Kagutsuchi).
The personality of the devil.
A bit of luck.
Some demons may even agree to join your team immediately, while others may leave even after receiving what they asked for.
After the contract
If the negotiation is successful, the demon joins your team and can:
To fight by your side.
Level up.
Learning new skills.
To be used in fusions in the World of Shadows.
Powers/Skills
In Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, the demons' powers are based on skills. There are hundreds of them (over 600), so they can't all be covered in a single answer. They are divided into the following categories:

Demon Summoners
In Shin Megami Tensei V and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, Demon Summoners are humans trained to fight demons using technology and hidden knowledge. Unlike the protagonist, they do not merge with a demon to become a Nahobino; instead, they use a device called the Demon Summoning Program to summon and command demons.
How it works
Demon Summoners carry a device with the Demon Summoning Program, capable of:
Summoning demons to the battlefield.
To form contracts with them.
Giving orders during combat.
Collect the demons when the fight is over.
Bethel
Most Demon Summoners in history belong to Bethel, an international organization created to protect humanity from demonic threats. The Japanese branch recruits individuals capable of confronting demons and utilizes the Demon Summoning Program in its operations.
Main Demon Summoners
Yuzuru Atsuta – An agent of Bethel Japan who summons demons to fight and protect Tokyo.
Ichiro Dazai – Receives a Demon Summoning Program upon joining Bethel and learns to command demons throughout the story.
Tao Isonokami – Serves as a member of Bethel and assists the group in their missions.
Yoko Hiromine (Canon of Vengeance) – Also works with Bethel and participates in the conflicts involving Da'at.
Difference for Nahobino
The protagonist is an exception. After merging with Aogami, he becomes a Nahobino, acquiring divine power. Because of this, he fights directly while also being able to recruit and fuse demons, something far beyond the capabilities of an ordinary Demon Summoner.
In summary, Demon Summoners are humans specialized in controlling demons through the Demon Summoning Program, serving as Bethel's main fighting force against the threats of Da'at, while the protagonist stands out for being a Nahobino, a unique and far more powerful being.

Shakan
These regions expand Da'at with new events, characters, and exclusive battles.
Da'at
Da'at is the main setting of Shin Megami Tensei V and Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. At first glance, it appears to be a vast desert filled with ruins, but it is actually the real Tokyo, devastated by an ancient war between angels and demons. The Tokyo where humans normally live is a recreation that hides this reality.
How does Da'at work?
Da'at is an extremely hostile world, inhabited by:
Demons from countless mythologies.
Angels and their armies.
Deities from different cultures.
Factions vying for control of the world.
Ordinary humans can almost never survive there without protection.
Exploration
Da'at is divided into large open areas. During your exploration, you can:
To find demons roaming freely.
Collect items and relics.
Discover hidden chests.
Complete secondary missions.
Finding sources of healing.
Recruiting new demons through negotiations.
The terrain features buried buildings, destroyed highways, caves, and mountains, encouraging vertical exploration.
Abscess
Scattered throughout Da'at are the Abscesses, large concentrations of demonic energy protected by powerful enemies. Destroying them unlocks new abilities and miracles in the World of Shadows, allowing the Nahobin and their team to become stronger.
Leyline Fountains
Leyline Fountains serve as rest stops and quick travel points. At them you can:
Recover HP and MP.
Save the progress.
Traveling to other Leylines that have already been discovered.
Access the World of Shadows.
World of Shadows
Through the Leyline Fountains, the Nahobino visits the World of Shadows, where he meets Sophia. In this place it is possible to:
To fuse demons.
Register and summon demons from the compendium.
Learning Miracles.
Strengthen your team.
Magatsuhi
Da'at is filled with Magatsuhi, a powerful spiritual energy. During exploration, you can collect Magatsuhi crystals to fill the corresponding bar. In battle, this energy allows you to use extremely powerful special abilities.
History
Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance tells a new version of the Shin Megami Tensei V story. At the beginning of the game, you can choose between two routes:
Canon of Creation: the original story of SMT V.
Canon of Vengeance: a new, exclusive Vengeance story, featuring new characters, areas, demons, and endings.
Beginning of the story
The protagonist is a high school student living in Tokyo. One day, while passing through a tunnel, a cave-in separates him from his classmates. When he awakens, he discovers that the city has been replaced by a vast desert called Da'at, a devastated version of Tokyo where angels and demons wage war.
While trying to survive, he is attacked by demons. At that moment, he encounters Aogami, a mysterious being who proposes a fusion to save him. The two unite, creating a Nahobino, a forbidden being with divine power.
Bethel
After escaping, the protagonist is recruited by Bethel, an international organization that fights demons and protects the human world. Alongside his colleagues and various divine representatives, he combats threats in Da'at while trying to uncover the truth about this world.
The truth about Da'at
As the story progresses, it is revealed that Da'at is the real Tokyo. The city where humans lived was a recreation created after an ancient war between gods. When God died, a dispute arose over the Throne of Creation, capable of reshaping all of reality.
The Canon of Vengeance
In the new Vengeance route, the story changes right from the start with the appearance of the Qadištu, a group of ancient goddesses who challenge both Bethel and the angelic forces. They believe the current world is unjust and wish to destroy the established order to restore an era before the rule of the monotheistic God.
During this journey, the protagonist meets Yoko Hiromine, a transfer student who plays a central role in this new story. As the plot unfolds, new conflicts arise between freedom, revenge, and the future.
