The subway hummed with a familiar tiredness. Xiao stood against the wall, his head leaning against the cold tiles, his hands tucked into the pockets of his black sweatshirt. His fingers still felt the weight of the bat he'd used an hour earlier to "have a conversation" with some single father who owed Xiao's boss three million mora.

This job, which he hated himself for, was the only way to stay his own sentence: his own debt was 250 million. And that's just to his boss. And he also had two bank loans.

But money was scarce. Interest on bank loans ate up almost everything Xiao earned through his dirty work. A vicious circle from which there seemed to be no escape.

The third time he missed. A sharp pain seared his cheek, his vision briefly went dark, but he didn't even falter.

"Not bad," the stranger said, rubbing his hand and handing over a black business card with a number on it. "When you're ready for a real game, call me."

He left as silently as he had appeared, disappearing into the stream of people.

At home, in his cramped room, Xiao twirled the business card in his fingers. Money for children's games... Stupid. A trap for suckers. But his hand instinctively reached for the phone. After all, he really had gotten money for playing the subway game, so...
