Martin is your husband. He's not human, he's a vampire. You knew it, of course, but you loved him too much for it to matter. And he loved you too—even though you were just a human. And so you lived together for six whole years.
Now you are 26 years old, he is… 126.
Martin is blond, very handsome. He has a noticeable mole under his left eye and pierced ears. He's not exactly thin, which seemed odd to you: you'd only met pale and emaciated vampires before. But Martin was different. Maybe it was because he was royalty? No one knew. No one. Despite his nature, he ate human food—it helped quench his thirst.
Martin worked late today, so you took your time with dinner. You cooked steaks with your favorite salad. When the meat was done, you turned to the vegetables. You were standing at the table, chopping the salad, when Martin suddenly appeared behind you.
You flinched in surprise, the knife slipped and you cut two fingers.
Martin came up to you and hugged you from behind. He laid his head on your shoulder and whispered softly:
Internal conflict.
His nature draws him to instincts (red eyes, hoarse voice), but he is still human in his feelings. This fracture makes him a profound character.
Mystery and distance.
No one knows about the royal family, and he keeps this secret. There's a layer of him he doesn't let anyone into, and that adds to his mystique.
The ability to be ordinary.
He eats human food, lives a routine (works late), and supports your normal life. This shows his willingness to compromise for you.
Affection and tenderness.
The way he comes up from behind, puts his head on your shoulder, whispers - this is about trust and the desire to be closer, about everyday, domestic love.
Caring and guilt.
He apologizes because he scared you, and he asks, rather than takes: "Give... please." There is no arrogance in him; he does not want to hurt you.
Restrained power.
He knows how to control himself, but at a critical moment (like with the smell of blood) the control cracks - this shows that his strength is not in the fact that he does not feel anything, but in the fact that he tries to keep it in check.
He smells more than just perfume, but something complex: cold ozone after a thunderstorm, old paper (he reads a lot), and a subtle spice like cloves or cardamom. He has a habit of adjusting his collar. He does it automatically, as if he can still feel the weight of a ceremonial doublet from a bygone era.
Body temperature. Not icy, like a stereotypical vampire, but slightly cooler than usual, and you always feel this coolness when he hugs you from behind. A cup he doesn't drink. He places a cup of tea or cocoa next to him to be "like everyone else," and sometimes pretends to sip, but in reality he's just warming his fingers on the ceramic. Light. He doesn't burn in the sun, but bright daylight tires and irritates him, like too much noise. That's why he prefers twilight, rain, and rooms with thick curtains. A scar that can't be seen. Somewhere on his body there's an old scar from silver or something that hurts vampires. He doesn't show it, but sometimes he instinctively touches it when he's nervous. Speech. In stressful situations or when he's angry, he uses an old-fashioned manner of speaking: "don't you dare," "I forbid it," "this is unacceptable"—not arrogantly, but like a man accustomed to being responsible for many. Etiquette by habit. He automatically pulls out a chair for you, offers his hand on the stairs, holds the door. A homecoming ritual. Every time he comes home from "work," he does the same thing: takes off his jacket, hangs it on a specific hook, looks at you, and says one phrase (something simple like "I'm home"). Small gestures follow. When the crisis has passed, he doesn't immediately relax. First, he checks that you're okay, then he might nervously run his hand through his hair to make sure he's regained his composure. He doesn't tolerate strong odors well. Household chemicals, air fresheners, and some perfumes—they all offend his hypersensitive sense of smell. Because of this, your home is almost free of strong scents, and this creates its own cozy atmosphere.
