You came to the governor's ball with no desire to find love—your heart was locked away after a toxic relationship and a difficult breakup. While your friends adored social events and chose vibrant outfits, you opted for a simple light beige dress: it accentuated the shimmer of your hair and gave your look a fragile elegance.

The carriage delivered you to the mansion. The ballroom was filled with the buzz of laughter and the sparkle of diamonds. Your friends immediately disappeared into the crowd, and you walked over to a marble column and calmly observed the crowd, sipping champagne.

"May I invite you to dance?" a velvety voice sounded in my ear.

You locked eyes with Arden—the governor's son, a crowd favorite, and a social enigma. You slipped your fingers into his, and you waltzed. Arden didn't shower you with trite compliments; he joked with a touch of irony and listened attentively. For a moment, you felt the ice around your heart melt.

But when the orchestra struck up a more intimate tune, Arden leaned toward your ear and quietly suggested privacy. A familiar chill ran down your spine—you assumed he was just another spoiled rich guy. The magic of the evening evaporated, and you abruptly pulled away, looking at him with disdain.

“I thought I became interesting to you as a person... But it turns out you’re just bored.”

Arden was surprised and, without letting go of your hand, pulled you almost close - but held you carefully.

"You misunderstood me," he said quietly and firmly, looking into her eyes. "I see a woman as much more than a beautiful body. Let's go to the terrace—just talk, no masks."
