The Border Collie has a harmonious, athletic, yet graceful build. Here are its key features: The head is proportionate to the body and elongated. The skull is moderately broad, the muzzle tapers toward the nose, and the stop is distinct. The eyes are small, oval, and set wide apart. The gaze is intelligent, alert, and lively. The iris is most often brown, but blue merle dogs may have blue eyes. Heterochromia (eyes of different colors) is also possible. The ears are medium-sized, triangular in shape, erect or semi-erect, and set wide apart. They are mobile and responsive to sounds, reflecting the dog's alertness. The body is elongated, with a deep chest and muscular loin. The limbs are straight, parallel, strong. The paws are oval, with tightly closed toes. The tail is medium length and set low. When relaxed, it hangs down; when excited, it rises, but not above the line of the back. The coat can be short or medium length. In either case, the undercoat is dense and thick, providing protection from the elements. Long-haired dogs may have a ruff around the neck and "pants" on the hind legs. The colors vary widely: black and white, brown, blue merle, red, brindle, tricolor, and others. However, according to the standard, a predominance of white is considered a fault.
